Talk about bizarre news stories: Woman sits on toilet for two years

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080312/ap_on_re_us/woman_in_bathroom_6

By ROXANA HEGEMAN, Associated Press Writer
37 minutes ago

WICHITA, Kan. - Authorities are considering charges in the bizarre case of a woman who sat on her boyfriend's toilet for two years — so long that her body was stuck to the seat by the time the boyfriend finally called police.

Ness County Sheriff Bryan Whipple said it appeared the 35-year-old Ness City woman's skin had grown around the seat. She initially refused emergency medical services but was finally convinced by responders and her boyfriend that she needed to be checked out at a hospital.

"We pried the toilet seat off with a pry bar and the seat went with her to the hospital," Whipple said. "The hospital removed it."

Whipple said investigators planned to present their report Wednesday to the county attorney, who will determine whether any charges should be filed against the woman's 36-year-old boyfriend.

"She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body," Whipple said. "It is hard to imagine. ... I still have a hard time imagining it myself."

He told investigators he brought his girlfriend food and water, and asked her every day to come out of the bathroom.

"And her reply would be, `Maybe tomorrow,'" Whipple said. "According to him, she did not want to leave the bathroom."

The boyfriend called police on Feb. 27 to report that "there was something wrong with his girlfriend," Whipple said, adding that he never explained why it took him two years to call.

Police found the clothed woman sitting on the toilet, her sweat pants down to her mid-thigh. She was "somewhat disoriented," and her legs looked like they had atrophied, Whipple said.

"She said that she didn't need any help, that she was OK and did not want to leave," he said.

She was reported in fair condition at a hospital in Wichita, about 150 miles southeast of Ness City. Whipple said she has refused to cooperate with medical providers or law enforcement investigators.

Authorities said they did not know if she was mentally or physically disabled.

Police have declined to release the couple's names, but the house where authorities say the incident happened is listed in public records as the residence of Kory McFarren. No one answered his home phone number.

The case has been the buzz of Ness City, said James Ellis, a neighbor.

"I don't think anybody can make any sense out of it," he said.

Ellis said he had known the woman since she was a child but that he had not seen her for at least six years.

He said she had a tough childhood after her mother died at a young age and apparently was usually kept inside the house as she grew up. At one time the woman worked for a long-term care facility, he said, but he did not know what kind of work she did there.

"It really doesn't surprise me," Ellis said. "What surprises me is somebody wasn't called in a bit earlier."

this story just doesnt sound possible... for example, how could anyone sit upright for 2 solid years without back problems, fusing of joints etc. How did she get proper nourishment and circulation? people in hospital laying on one side for a few weeks get bed sores...how could this not happen to someone sitting on hard surface for 2 years... what did she do to pass the time, was she on drugs like the zombie guy in the movie "Seven?" what was up with the boyfriend to not get her some help? the whole thing sounds unlikely

No shower, no shave, I hope she ran the fan for two years! Can you imagine the BO on this girl. She must not be mentally 'all' there.

I actually had to go to a death scene in Houston, when I was working homicide division. There was a very, very large woman that had grown to the lounge chair that she had be sitting in for the 3 previous years. A wall of her house had to be cut by the HFD, and her and the chair was then transported intact to the Harris County Morgue, where they separated her from the Lazy-Boy. The cause of death was ruled as a natural, due to the development of a massive infection, where the fabric had been encased by her flesh on her back and legs. I guess those Lazy-Boy chairs, are really comfortable.

So on a Sunday after I've watched three football games, my wife may just be right when she says "You better get up or you'll grow into that chair."

You'd think so - you'd think it would be impossible to sit anywhere for 2 years straight, or even for most of 2 years (like, say, 20 hours per day).

But these parts of the article are hard to explain:

"the 35-year-old Ness City woman's skin had grown around the seat."

and

"We pried the toilet seat off with a pry bar and the seat went with her to the hospital," Whipple said. "The hospital removed it."

I think it's possible. It's not that the skin would 'grow around the seat,' but she would likely develop pressure ulcers where she contacts the seat from unrelieved pressure and abrasion. The skin (as well as underlying fat and muscle) would die in these areas and autolyse (melt). Then the remaining tissue around the ulcer might mold itself around the seat. She would have a sort of chronic low-grade infection, but people can go for many years with these. After a matter of weeks of sitting, she would indeed get joint contractures and muscle atrophy, and would be unable to move without help. Really not much different than being chronically bedridden, which you find in any nursing home.

After seeing the mobile home on the news where it went down, I'm not longer as suprised. When they interviewed the sheriff of the small town where it happened, he looked visibly disturbed talking about her ass being fused to the toilet seat. Not an image you would soon forget.
