For those who want to see the movie, but don't want to give Sean Penn any of your money, download the torrent here

Whats so amazing as depicted in the movie was his hop over the winter stream which later became a wide and fast stream he was unable to cross. That was to become his trap!! I was more fascinated by this kids scrot regarding his romp down the Colorado in a kyak; with no previous experince no less....then his survival in a school bus to be "in the moment". Idealism is one thing, spending your parents money on an Emory education only to take off and say good bye to now one was an act of shelfishness and self centered ego. He got into the moment alright and died a painful death, alone and lost. Was his story really that unique?

We were all idealistic back in the great hippie days. Everyones dream was to get a piece of "free land" in the Canadian wilderness, with our Whole Earth Catalogs and cocky, youthful enthusiasm and sense of security. I wanted to build a log cabin, grow my own grass, talk to the bears and read Ginsberg poetry, only to ask, "whats it all about"? Yeah, right?! That dream popped once I got my car payment coupon book in the mail! I found myself getting pissed off with this guy because of those he abandoned and how much pain he caused them.

His last written words were his epitaph...........sad indeed.

One poignant part of the movie is when the "I've-seen-this-guy-a-hundred-times-before" Alaskan drops McCandless off at the end of the road and tells him "here's my number, IF you make it out alive, give me a call and I'll come and pick you up."

So McCandless was not even unique. The Alaskans have seen his act many times before. They don't even try and talk the myopians out of it. They just try and help where they can.

i was hanging with an old Alaskan timber jack last year for a few days. We were a few hours north of Phoenix. He's there in the forest every year for the summer if anyone wants to track him down. He arrives in May. He's the real deal.
