That video's been around a long time. They say it was going very fast, up to 60 mph or more, and had a ton of steel in the bed. Conventional crash tests show vanagons to do surprisingly well. In a head-on crash test with a Volvo wagon, the vanagon dummy is barely hurt, while the Volvo dummy is dead.

Either way I don't think I want to ride in a Vanagon going over 60 mph and with a ton of steel in the bed! Now I might be safer ridin in back with the steel though!

Doesn't look like there's anything in the bed.

I won't ride in vanagons any more after my friend's caught fire and EXPLODED.
Two years ago we were moving some furniture to my friend's new place. After the first leg of the trip I told him "Drop me off at my car and I'll drive along with you, I don't trust this POS."
Well, as we're driving to his new house, he falls back on the freeway and we get separated. I get to the house, and end up waiting an hour and a half before he calls, with the news that the van had caught fire in the middle of the I-90 tunnel, and blown up.
It blew the tiles off the inside of the tunnel, and as far as I know they still haven't replaced them.

Edit: My friend was ok. Luckily someone pulled up next to him, waving frantically, and shouted "Your car is on fire!" He hadn't noticed until then.
