I drove on the beach in Galveston in high school, early 80s - IIRC, it was near Pirate's Beach.

That was cool . . .

Drank a lot of beer there, too.

I have driven on the beach here at the Outer Banks many times. There is nothing like just cruising out to the inlet, and having lunch while watching the birds, and boats, and smelling the salt air.

Twenty years ago, you only saw fishermen on the beach. If you saw a female in a bathing suit, everybody stared.

Now that everyone has an SUV, it's all families enjoying the sun. Much too risky to cast a hook into the water for fear of hooking someone.

As we speak, the government is trying to close our beaches to motor vehicles.

I did at Daytona in a rental, just because that's what I had. I flew down for business; didn't drive my car down.

A buddy of mine managed to bury his Cherokee up to the axles on a beach at a nearby lake. He called a group of us to rescue him. Being Friday night and in high school, we were good and drunk. We arrived at the lake just in time to meet the nice police officer that was giving them all MIPs. I should have made my friend pay me back for mine.

I have driven on the beach in Daytona, got my 4x4 stuck up to it's neck in soft sand at Pismo, got a Diahatsu stuck to it's doors on a beach in Costa Rica, Playa Negro and Witches Rock, but the Diahatsu was easy to get out, the 4x4 took awhile.

I seem to remeber driving on the beach in Oregon... I thought it was Gold beach but maybe it was Cannon?

There is a reason they have so many DIY car washes in Pismo.

That's sad . I remember the Outer Banks from the 60s when it was VERY remote, and took real effort to get there...you wouldn't see a single person, and if you did, it was someone fishing. I went back about 10 years ago (after Labor Day, so offseason), and was so disgusted with "the development" that I'll likely never go back. I see folks driving around with OBX stickers on their SUVs and cringe...they don't realize that paradise has been replaced with "progress", and it's never coming back. Once they built the bridges (replacing the ferrys) and opened up the easy access to folks from VA/DC, it was inevitiable imo...

I read it - kinda different. Yet another in a long line of post-apocalyptic novels. It did have a racing tie-in IIRC.

Wow, no kidding Scott. There is one just to the right of Grand ave when you drive out off the beach and on any weekend, there is a line around the corner for that place. The owner must be laughing all the way to the bank

I've driven for miles out at Long Beach, WA. Unfortunately it was in the wife's Expedition, but it was a nice break from family time during a reunion.

The pint of Vodka might have also helped the experience.

I used to live in San Luis Obispo, so driving on Pismo was a regular event for us. Good times!

Long Beach, Tofino, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.

Very close to a sign that says you're at the most Westerly point of Canada.

Stay away from the water. I have seen more than a couple of cars making their way back to Japan due the driver venturing too close.
