Wrong.

God's word requires the existence of God. Are you able to convince us the Bible is the word of God? Didn't think so.

Stuart J,

I can put on my pants very well each morning, thank you very much. I wonder why you so vehemently protest something you don't believe in. If it makes you feel better to insult my intelligence, then I hope you enjoyed it. I was trying to give Milt an honest answer to what I believed to be an honest question. In fact, since you believe all this to be superstition and bronze age nonsense, I truly wonder why you bothered to read the thread at all.

I doubt you care, but in answer to your question to Trekkor, neither passage is incorrect. The old testament was originally written in Hebrew and N.T. in Greek. The OT word in Ecclesiastes, if I have interpreted correctly, the Hebrew word is Yada, which means to know or to experience. In this sense, the dead no longer experience or know life on this earth.

Milt's question was 'what exactly would hell be like?', to paraphrase.
My first conscious memory is probably being about 1 1/2 yrs old, trying to figure out how I got into this crib and how am I going to get out! Apparently I missed the earth's creation, all of the Devonian, PreCambrian, Jurassic and every other period; I missed the Mongol and Roman Empires, I missed pretty well everything up until Woodstock waiting to be born. Where was my soul then? In Heaven? Hopefully not in Hell. But the thing is, despite waiting around for between 6,000 and billions of years (covering all bases here), it didn't seem like much of a wait at all. So the only comfort I can take right now (because I am not convinced of an afterlife) is that my consciousness will go back to that same place where I was while waiting to be born. And it won't seem prolonged nor painful nor boring... it just won't 'seem' like anything.
A followup question I have is regarding heaven: All of our descriptions of Heaven and Hell seem to use concepts we understand as humans: peace, pain, fire, milk and honey, bliss, torture, etc... My concept of Heaven would include sports cars and highways with no traffic enforcement, free beer and no hangovers, loud rock music and naked chicks. Some of the people I know would hope for some peace and quiet, everything the opposite of what would seem Heavenly to me. My heaven would be someone else's Hell. How to reconcile this, if we are to take biblical descriptions of Heaven literally?

A return to the dust...

No thoughts. Done.

There is a resurrection, however.

'Lake of fire'. That's from Revelation. A book presented in signs or visions to John.
Notice that death is also cast into the lake of fire. Death is not a person. It's a condition.

The lake of fire is not a place. Rather, it is symbolic for permanent destruction without the hope of a resurrection.
When death is cast into the lake of fire, that means death will no longer have an effect on mankind ( everlasting life )

The account of 'the rich man and Lazarus' is not literal. It was an illustration.

In the account, the idea of a drop of water somehow relieving the rich man seem ridiculous.
How would one drop of water be of any comfort?

Obviously, it means something else.
Since the dead can't feel anything, this further shows that it has another meaning.

And... There's so much more!

Why would eternal torture be a just punshment for a short lifetime of error?
It isn't. A loving God would never burn anyone.

The penalty for sin is death. That is all.
Roman's 6:7- "For he who has died has been acquitted from [his] sin."

An acquittal is a pardon from error.
Everlasting punishment is not a Bible teaching.

I wasnt insulting you. I have no idea what you do or dont believe.

Edit- to be fair. If you are saying you do in fact believe the things you posted to be true, I will indeed call your intelligence- indeed your sanity- into question.
