WTF - girl has "secret baby", gives birth, walks to hospital with infant attached

Every day living in this city gets more and more f*cked up. I seriously don't know how much longer it'll be before (1) I snap and can't take it anymore and run screaming off to AZ or NV or TX and (2) the "stupid people" (like this one) completely succeed in taking over our society. They're already clearly out-breeding the rest of us into extinction.

At least she had enough sense to go to a hospital - I guess. Several hours/weeks/months too late.

Anyone want to place bets on how long it'll be before she goes & gets knocked up again?

LONG BEACH, California (AP) -- A 17-year-old girl gave birth secretly at home, then walked four blocks to a hospital with the baby still attached by its umbilical cord.

Xochitl Parra holds newborn Alejandro, as her sister, left, a nurse and Parra's mother pose with her Saturday.

"I was just a little nervous" when the labor began, Xochitl Parra said Friday from St. Mary Medical Center as she cradled her 8-pound, 3-ounce son, Alejandro.

The boy was normal and "eating like a champ," said Dr. Jose Perez, director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The teenager said she was alone and taking a shower around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to get ready for school. Then the contractions took over.

"I felt his head coming, so I sit down and pushed so he could come out," she said.

Parra did not call 911 because the home phone was disconnected, and she did not want to wake the neighbors because it was so early. Instead, she wrapped the baby, got dressed and went to the hospital on foot.

"I started walking and jogging to the hospital," she said.

The teen came into the hospital lobby and asked for help, Perez said.

"She still had the placenta and the baby was still attached, so of course everyone said, 'Don't move!' " he said.

Perez praised the girl for taking quick action.

"They could have bled to death; thank God that didn't happen," the doctor said. "She was very clever. She knew what to do. She wrapped the baby up and walked over here."

Parra, a sophomore at Long Beach Poly High, said she kept her pregnancy a secret because she was afraid her mother would "kick me out of the house." Her mother has now accepted the situation and is going to help the teen care for the baby so she can continue attending school, Parra said.

Perez called the outcome "heartwarming."

"We hear so much negative with teenagers throwing their babies in the Dumpsters," he said. "This baby is fine, and hopefully there will be a happy ending with the extended family."

What's wrong? The doctor himself said she was "very clever" and took "quick action". Well, relatively quick anyway. Just a few months too late.

I'm sure there was insurance to cover this.

Jeff, you used to put me down when I talked about what a sewer Long Beach is. Your tone has changed over the last few weeks. What made you finally see the situation as it is?

Mostly just down on SoCal in general. . . I still prefer living here to L.A. or virtually anywhere else around these parts. All facts considered I guess I still have it pretty good - I live literally a football throw from the beach and what-not but I guess I'm just sick of seeing the general direction this entire area is going (not just Long Beach, but SoCal in general). Clearly trending towards the stupider and more vapid.

Used to be my vision was to start my own business in this city and plan on being here a long time. I doubt that'll be the case anymore. I still most definitely want to go into practice for myself, but it certainly won't be in Long Beach and most likely won't be in the greater ratrace known as the L.A. basin. The further I can get away from this decaying hellhole the better.

Parts of the LBC are still quite nice and I still overall like it here in the immediate area I am, but I know it'll only last so long before the onslaught of stupid, indiscriminate folks who surround this little enclave oozes into this area too and eventually drags it down to third world status like pretty much everything else around here. It's on borrowed time and I'd rather not be here when it eventually starts going to the "dawgs".

My route home from work goes right through downtown Long Beach on 6th street east to 7th street east to the 22 fwy.
6th street near the 710 is a cesspool, 7th street near temple isn't much better.
I drive by and look at these people hanging out on the street and shake my head in disbelief.
Things that you would expect to only see on a cheesy television show. Stereotypes are alive but not well.
I won't drive that route after dark.

Parts of LA are worse but I never go there unless I absolutely have to.

The unique thing about Long Beach is that it's a large city by the beach. Santa Monica come sto mind as well and they have their problems. So does San Diego. What keeps LB from being another Oakland or Fresno is the beach property which they don't have. Nevertheless, LB is the poorest city by the number of people living under the poverty level for cities 100K+ in CA and the 6th in the US.

There are two bands of wealthy properties and the entire middle class East side, which is basically white bread. Otherwise it would be night and day with no gray. What can we attribute this lowly status? LB is more diverse than LA, last I knew.

So, those that champion diversity, here's your model. Come on down.

My wife is a social worker, and just got moved to the child protection unit. She had a party friday night for her coworkers. You should hear some of the stories... I find it mind-boggling. There is a whole different sub-culture out there that many of us cannot ever understand.

18 year old girl goes to the hospital because she's constipated. While waiting to see a doctor, goes to the washroom to try to take a dump. To her surprize, pushes out a healthy 7lb baby girl. Who's the dad? "Depends, I guess... last summer was pretty crazy."

17 years old and a sophomore in HS? I guess that says it all.

SoCal seems to be the dream destination for the stupid and ignorant. Some of the stupidest people I know dream of LA. To that I say, you can have them. Some days I'm glad nobody wants to come to KS.

SoCal isn't what it was 10 years ago. When I talk to people who have been here longer (20, 30 years and more) they're horrified to see the direction this region is trending - and the accelerating pace of it.

Personally I think the region is circling the drain and will eventually collapse into ruin. There will always be "nice" areas, but I see the lower-income, less-educated, trashy/ghetto areas becoming more and more expansive as time goes on and the nicer/more desirable areas becoming smaller, more expensive, more "squeezed" and harder to find.

In another 10-15 years I think the entire region will pretty much look like North Long Beach, East L.A., Watts, Compton or Wilmington. Maybe even Tijuana. Overcrowded, run-down, trashy, poor, uneducated, gang-infested and "ethnic" (i.e. not inclusive, but dominated by one particular demographic with all others being shunned or excluded) and generally not a pleasant place to be.

Very sad to see. I'm already making my plans to relocate (unfortunately we can't go too far because of the wife's job) but I can at least get us far enough from the onslaught of the decline. Yes, part of it is old-fashioned "white flight" but part of it is simply being fed up and sick of the congestion and overcrowding, declining quality of life and paying more and more each year for the "privilege".

I don't care how bad it gets though - I still wouldn't go back to the northeast or midwest though. I have my standards.

You think this hasn't been happening for a hundred years? Probably since civilization began. Most states now have baby drop off laws where hospitals are required to take any baby on a confidential basis, with no retribution against the mother, if it is dropped off within a few days of being born. It's better than the baby being dropped in a dumpster.

Agree. LA and Long Beach are shot. I visit LA every now and then and it is too crowded and dirty for words. Some of the old bars and restaurants in the city that use to frequent are still there, which is great, but getting to them has become more difficult.
Even when you hang out with people in Hollywood and the Valley, many act like they are "so cool" and at my age I just think it is just sad. Nothing like NYC where everyone coexist; culturally and social economically.

So when I returned to Socal from living in Europe and NJ, I chose Orange County. Not bad down here and have "zero" complaints. OC has evolved from its "OC curtain" attitude, but it does seem to run pretty well (gang reduction in Santa Ana, good freeways, decent schools, decent neighbors (1:20 is a snob but we all agree their kids are spoiled), culturally diverse but not overwelming, etc.)...

I always wonder how people stay in Long Beach and prefer it to parts of Orange County. But to each his own...
