Subaru commercial verbiage -- who writes this crap?

Watching the Sox game last night, a Subaru ad comes on. It says: "The Subaru Forester features a powerful boxer engine for improved handling and control."

Huh?

Lower CG. But I agree, that's really hamfisted writing.

Agreed. "Car guys" like us get what they're trying to say but Joe Six-Pack won't.

Boxter engine = lower C/G of the drivetrain, better handling and less likelihood of rollover.

not "boxter" it's boxer (a boxter has a boxer motor)
as in a horizontally opposed 4 or 6 cylinder
ie: porsche & VW use a boxer motor

It's "Boxster".

I think Jeff just slipped; he knows the difference . . .

"BOXSTER" is a car model from Porsche
BOXer engine in a roadSTER type car.

subies have BOXER engines and have for quite some time. all my cars have BOXER engines but not all are Porsche's

also BMW motorcycles use a BOXER engine format in some of their models.

horizontally opposed cylinders that look like two fighters punching each others gloves thus the visual description of the engines movement.

so the BOXER term is correct.

If Subaru's weren't so damn ugly, they'd be a winner. I just can't get Martina Navratilova image out of mind when I see one driving down the road, but its what's on the inside that counts I guess.

Yes, I know.

Perhaps you missed Looney's reference to the "Boxster" as a "Boxter"?

My emphasis added above.

That's what I was referring to, FWIW.

I think I have a fairly decent grasp on engine configurations and nomenclature.

Best,

Alright... try this on for size.

All boxer engines are horizontally opposed, but not all horizontally opposed engines are boxers.

Discuss.

The only other engine configuration that I can think of that could be described as horizontally opposed and isn't a boxer would be an opposed piston engine. It is similar to a boxer but the tops of the pistons face each other and it would have two crankshafts.

In the purest sense (which mean only absolute whack jobs care about the difference) a boxer engine has opposing cylinders where the pistons reach TDC at the same time. Meaning that the fists of the boxers hit each other simultaneously.

A 180V is a horizontally opposed engine where the pistons share the same crank pin and therefore reach TDC at exactly opposite time. The fists of the "boxers" would be trading blows as opposed to striking each other at the same time.

Ironically, the Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer actually has a 180degree V 12 and not a traditional boxer engine. The Boxster however, is appropriately named.

Most "normal" people would consider both engines boxers.

Subaru has been using that 'line' for decades. Since the flat 4's were air cooled.

Low CG.
