Senator Lowenthal (hearts) commies

http://www.kcoy.com/news/state/story.aspx?content_id=08c1824f-6d68-4558-88e3-3c4a90a32b98

Normally I'm FOR eliminating old legislation from the books, but in this particular case I don't know if it's the right time/place. . . Last thing I think CA needs is more condoning of communism. It's already destroying the state, this would just legitimize it more methinks. . .

California bill would repeal laws targeting communists

Last Update: 5/15 5:52 pm

SACRAMENTO (AP) - The California Senate has voted to repeal Cold War-era laws designed to punish organizations and public employees who profess support for the Communist Party.

The legislation prompted a debate about whether communism remains a threat to the United States.

Senator Alan Lowenthal says America won the Cold War and that it's time to move on.

His bill would repeal a 1953 law that allows school districts and state government agencies to fire teachers and other public employees for being members of the Communist Party.

It also would repeal a law requiring outside groups that want to use school facilities to sign a form stating they do not have communist affiliations.

The Long Beach Democrat says it's a freedom-of-speech issue.

Senator Jeff Denham, a Republican from Merced, opposed the legislation. He says the Communist Party is alive and well and is still trying to overthrow the U.S. government.

Under Lowethal's bill, public employees still could be fired for advocating the violent overthrow of the government.

Jeff,

You and I know that "Freedom of speech" is only acceptable when preaching Marxism, liberalism, homosexuality and killing fetuses. I wonder if Ayn Rand and other great conservative thinkers/philosophers would be allowed to be presented at local Long Beach schools...I think not.

I occasionally drive by your building on Spring and wonder when we are actually going to have a beer!

Bob
