Finally got my M4 completely set up the way I want. No mods left to do except maybe get a decent sling. This began as a bone stock Bushmaster M4. After some disassembly, I realized that a previous owner had not known what he was doing with it. Some stuff was missing, some stuff was stripped and some stuff was just well hidden.

Before:

I hated the fixed carry handle and wanted a flat top so I could add optics. I got a new Del-Ton upper receiver for $95 and Gunbrokered off my old one for $105. Why would anyone pay that much for this? Then I got a new gas block to replace the old iron sight one. Then I got an Omega rail/free float tube. Then I got a very cool tac-light mount from Cheaper Than Dirt and slapped in one of my cheapo Surefires, which works great. Then I got a Millet Zoom Dot scope and "persuader" flash hider for those times when I need to lift up barbed wire and voila! She's done.

After:

Tomorrow I will go to the local gunshow and spend part of Grandma's b-day check on about 1000 rds. of .223. From now until the election, I will be putting a few hundred $$ a month into ammo hording. Remember - the revolution will not be catered! Oh, and I'll have my AZ CCW next week or so.

Rick,
Very nice, but too up close and personal.
You don't want to smell the coffee breath.
This is the ticket:

What is the difference between an M4 and an AR15?

I'm probably going to get myself a Bushmaster AR15 Varminter after my 951 sells or in August--whichever happens first.

M4 is the short version of the M16 with some product improvements. Technically, the M4 is selective fire so unless a civilian has a class III permit what one really owns is a AR15 carbine.

Fast924S, I am the world's biggest cheapskate and so I probably have a lot less into this than anyone else would if they built it themselves. The best sites for this stuff are AR15.com, SIGforum.com, GlockTalk and maybe Gunbroker. I got the rifle as seen in the first photo and with a hard case in an even trade for one of my Springfield 1911's. I stole that Springfield too and had $688 into it, while they go for $850-$900. So I started out with $688 into the rifle plus shipping and the FFL transfer, call it $725. Anytime I replace parts, I eBay off the old stuff to help offset the cost of the new stuff. I probably have another $600 net into this, so $1325 total. It might be cheaper to find one already set up the way you want it, but I didn't know what I wanted to do when I got this. I just knew I had to have one before I moved to AZ, as I didn't know when I'd be changing residency from VA to AZ.

Jm, I will be adding more bolt action rifles to the arsenal soon enough, but I'm more concerned with getting as much as I can of what might eventually be banned by the next president and Congress before they take office. I doubt any bolt action rifle will be banned other than maybe .50 cals and I can't afford them anyway.

We can always use snipers and long distance guys. My M4 is more of a home/neighborhood defense gun. I'm not as paranoid yet as Kachi22, but I'm getting to the point of seriously wanting to horde ammo.

Today when I went to qualify for my CCW, I realized I had left my 50 rd. box of ammo at home. But I just happened to have enough spare loaded magazines in the glove box to get me through. I want to always be that prepared.

Instead of "revolution", 'round these parts we refer to "when the zombies come".

You will not need a scope. You will not have enough ammo.

How long does ammo stay good anyway? I've got a few boxes that are getting up around 6-7 years old and I kinda' want to go blow it off for fear it might be deteriorating. Or can it just be kept indefinitely and still trusted?

I recently shot military .223 loaded before 1983. I believe that military ammo, stored in original dunnage can last for many decades. Military ammo, non-corrosive primed with a crimp in the primer well and primer sealed with lacquer should last for a lifetime. Civilian manufactured may not last as long as the primer is not sealed like the military stuff.

Looks like a good car gun.

I got a flash hider from Brownells. Looks like a persuader, very sharp. I chased the male threads down with a 1/2x28 die and used blue Loctite on them.
