Is this a machine pistol?

As seen on the road the other day in the I.E. Reminds me of the thread about the changing face of the police these days - but I couldn't find the post.

Is this a machine gun? Even if it's not, is it necessary for our M/C officers to display it in this manner? Maybe it is, but I'm not so sure.

You may also notice CHP and other police have added assault rifles to the shotguns attached to their dash board.

I wondered if it could be for speed enforcement. Although I do get the occasional ticket, I hope that's what that is.

Speed enforcement?! What would you do if you saw a cop aiming that thing at you?

If it is an automatic firearm it is possible the officer was on some kind of special duty, first time I have ever seen anything like that.

Maybe someone could PM mmarsh and get his opinion.

I dont see a mag, or if there is one it seems pretty inconsequential to be effective.

Pretty silly to carry it that way. He can't leave his bike and have it mounted like that and it'd be a PITA to stash it in the side case every time he had to walk away from his bike. There's no magazine in it, which means it's useless if he needs it in a hurry. I don't know how such a gun could be useful to a motorcycle cop in any way. Those small SMG's aren't particularly accurate or easy to control and you certainly wouldn't want to use one on full auto with any innocent bystanders around. Machine guns in real life are absolutely nothing like what you see in the movies. They get very hot very fast, are hard to control and it takes a very long time to reload the magazines. Oh, and they're usually north of $10k.

I cannot imagine why a department would want a motor officer visibly armed with something so intimidating to most citizens. The image it presents is simply all wrong.

I don't find it intimidating at all. I see it as an extreme waste of money. It probably cost about what the motorcycle cost and any criminal who knew how to shoot well could easily take down that cop before he'd be able to make use of that gun. Oh, and dropping the bike could get especially expensive with such a gun mounted on it.

12 years ago (last time I was out of the US...), I went through the metal detector in Munich airport getting ready for the trip back to the states. I was manually patted down as there was steel in my ankle. Very stern looking individual stood watching from about 25 feet away holding a similar weapon.

The last night we were in Munich was the eve of the opening events of Oktoberfest. The local constabulary walking platz doing security checks also had similar armaments. I doubt things have changed in the intervening years.

We're 20 years behind the times.

MP-5's are standard fare in German airports, even on the trains to the soccer games. But those cops are in a lot fewer shootouts than ours are, perhaps because would-be criminals can't easily outgun the cops. For a gun culture like ours, I think our cops are severely undergunned.

You must understand - this is a small town, modestly affluent, a bedroom community. Almost no businesses, no murders.
