What new gun control laws are coming in 2009 and beyond?

I'm becoming a black helicopter nut and am starting to horde ammo, hi-capacity magazines and maybe a few more "assault rifles". I hope to have grown the collection a lot by the time the next president takes office with a near filibuster- or even veto-proof Dem majority in Congress. What do you guys predict? A 1000% ammunition tax? New assault weapons ban? Gun registration? I don't think we're even safe if the SCOTUS strikes the DC gun ban. I have no confidence whatsoever in our government to respect laws or court decisions.

You forgot the micro-ID'd ammunition.

I predict there will be a movement to outlaw gun ownership by private citizens entirely on a nationwide basis within the next 10 years.

Pfffffftttt! They won't be changing squat.

They might push through some anemic bill with a scary sounding title like "The Firearms Violence Reduction Act", but they know the score. The public is not interested in gun control. Its a loosing issue.

Keep an eye on the supreme court, because the DC decision is going to be HUGE.

Everyone thought that and then Clinton AWB came around.

Well, that was what helped the Republicans take over Congress in '94 and the AWB did not get renewed when it sunset. I know Dems know gun control is a losing issue. But they tended to overreach even when they weren't in the majority. I predict they will be drunk with power in 2009.

I can deal with new gun restrictions, as they will be temporary and I will have most of the guns I want by the time any new law hits the books. My concern is being able to pursue the hobby. And even without a crazy ammunition tax, it's getting pretty expensive on its own. Luckily, I now live in state that would probably ignore any new fed. gun restrictions.

And what effect did it have? I bought a Norinco MAK90 when the 'ban' was in effect. I had to buy it with the lame 'sporterized' stock, but so what? It took me all of an hour to put a fiber stock on it.

The effect was that the law created a new market for pre and post-ban weapons, the former being a lot more expensive at the time. It's complete BS. Pretty sure any new AWB would have some more teeth than just the silly cosmetic definitions the last one had. Maybe that crazy CA law would become the federal one - fixed 10 rd. mag. on an AR - nuts. Thank God that law eliminated crime.

Never stopped 'em before.

True.

'Logic' and 'Facts' don't seem to faze them either.

you forgot the liberals a Dem president will appoint to the Supreme Court so they can fix the Constitution. Any right to bear arms is subject to interpretation.

I predict the Supreme Court will rule this year in District of Columbia v. Heller, 07-290 that the second amendment guarantees an individual's right to keep and bear arms.

Maybe. But that doesn't mean it can't be revisited as soon as Obama gets his own folks on the court. And it doesn't mean he and Congress can't ram through all kinds of new restrictions on what you can own. BTW, why are Constitutional Amendments subject to "reasonable restrictions" if the Amendment includes the words "shall not be infringed"?

Many of those NEW Dems in Congress are CONSERVATIVE and are PRO GUN. Rahm Emanuel in 2006 chose people who could win elections, which meant they didn't have to be card carrying Liberal members of the ACLU.

Even Obamas "CLINGING to their guns" Statements acknowledges that a vast number of Americans want guns. It is elitist in the fact that he thinks he has an enlightened position on the matter.

I was talking to one old boy from WI. He said that sure down in Chicago with all the gangs and crime guns could look like a problem, but out in more rural America it is no problem.

McCain recently spoke before the NRA membership...asking for forgiveness of past sins, promising to sin no more. Hillary and Obama know better than to try this...

Yeah, and we all know politicians mean what they say around election time.

If McCain can and would really explain why he thought his anti-gun positions made sense at one time and what made him change his mind, I'd be willing to listen.

I highly doubt any NRA members would support that. Make a deal with the devil and you're the junior partner.

I expect that the focus will be "rules" changes that will make ammo and reloading prohibitively expensive. Since these don't actully require real legislation, they could be implemented by a President Obama. Look at the recent attempt to change the rules on shipping of smokeless powder and primers. It would have increased the cost by a factor of 10. And it was being done for "Transportation" safety, not gun control. And who can be against making the highways safer?

This is the new Handgun Control Inc. Sue Walmart in the court of public opinion.
