get it checked, if you wait...you may have to wait for it to 'calm down'
Dentist don't like to work on 'inflamed' so go now.
Should it be the tooth, get both done.
IV sedation is the way to go..wake up drolling & but happy.

I still have all four of mine.

My twelve-year-old just had all of hers out last week.

I don't like this thread.

Lower jaw, lots of nerves.

People have died in dentist chairs getting wisdom teeth pulled or had half their face paralyzed.

This is why unless they are bothering you and causing trouble they just leave them in, an unnecessary risk to remove them according to the injury lawyers.

I have one left in myself.

Ugh. I don't envy you.

I consider myself lucky in that I'm a bit of a genetic freak - I'm one of something like 5% of the population without wisdom teeth at all (I was born without them). So I've never had to go through the hell/expense of removal. By contrast my wife went through it a few years ago. Nasty stuff. Very unpleasant. I also have blood type A-, which is pretty rare, and a few other things that make me kinda' biologically unusual.

Best of luck - I'd go see the dentist and get it over with as soon as possible though. I'm counting my blessings that even despite my own problems, wisdom teeth aren't one of them. Ugh!

once upon a time in a land far far away(unit 10-williams) on a late season deer hunt where my amigo crapped out on me due to raging wife. i had the honor of hunting by myself and the high during the day was 9degrees+ . i noticed something in my rear tooth. figuring i had eaten a boatload of tortilla chips one may have got caught back there.

well me being me and a life scout almost eagle i was prepared. waa-laa mega swiss army knife w/toothpick to the rescue. as the days progressed in the middle of nowhere things got worse. on the 9th day of subfreezing weather, red flag wind warnings and a mouth full of hurt i pushed on this large bulbous mound in my mouth and was rewarded with a "pop" , lots of foul tasting blood and quite a bit of relief. none the less no deer, figured time to hit it home and visit dentist.

dentist tells me another day i would be in the hospital w/IV's! oh freeking boy! i have just the man you want to see...........a periodontist. well w/in the 1/2 hour quality visit time im on the gas and wisdumb tooth removed. real fun.

as time progresses with dr. john lee(certed porsche nut) we find my pockets are rather deep in the rear upper lower quadrants.

SINCE I HAVE NEVER TO THIS DAY HAD A CAVITY and having braces in h.s. didnt think much of it. well time moves on and gums start to bleed.

next thing i know im on mega large valiums and the gas again and they are splitting my gums and laying goretex down left side upper/lower quadrants. talk about PAIN! well 6 months later we go back in for other side. mind you i still hadnt recovered from first op. 1 ******* DEGREE OFF WARM OR COLD and i was ON MARS as FAR AS PAIN! never had i experienced pain like this. not even bailing off dirt bikes at mega mach speed into cholla and rocks.

well...............10 years later of quality time with dr. lee, and we just had another wizdumb tooth removed about 6 weeks ago. actually went in 2 days ago and all is fine as far as healing.

bottomline................deep pockets, infected impacted wizdumbs, high plaque buildup can KILL YOU! buildup of crap on teeth can directly affect heart. consider this passed on in the gene pool. my dental insurance is crap for most of this but im glad i have made it through this.

crux of biscuit..............i brush like a mutha, floss like a mutha, use mouth wash like a mutha to avoid plaque buildup. i dont eat popcorn nor tortilla chips!

Either I don't have them or they're recessed or otherwise situated such that they won't come in. I forget which, the dentist told me this back when I was in my early-to-mid 20s (I guess about the time they normally start watching for this stuff). Supposedly a small percentage of the population has this situation where they basically don't have to worry about them, which I'm grateful for. . .

Jeff, that's what the dentist told my wife too. Until she started having constant jaw pain. Now she's had two out, and still has two in place.

I had mine out when I was a kid,

I had a friend that used to do gas as a recreational drug... not sure it is all that great.

I have been knocked out twice for surgery - wisdom tooth and four pins put in my leg after a motorcycle accident.

Two words... Sodium Pentothal... don't go under the knife without it!

Gas as a recreational drug is a very bad idea. I'm surprised your friend is alive.

Wayne, I feel the pain. Hope you feel better soon.

Wayne,
I had one of my third molars removed a few years ago and it wasn't bad at all. Now, the root canal and the liver biopsy, those two were something else, entirely...

I had all four of mine out when I was 18, on the same day. It might very well have been the worst day of my life. Glad that its done now though, better than having them done now like some of my friends. Or having them done when I'm in my late twenties or early thirties.

all 4 out at once. sodium pentathol. (sp?) Oral surgeon. The healing took time, and there was pain. But it feels so good when it's over.

I am a certified 'Anti-Dentite", I freaking hate going to the dentist. I had a tooth crack, that was crowned a couple of months ago. Well the crack apparently went all the way to one of the nerves, and yeah, it started really hurting last Thursday. I lived on Advil until Monday morning so I could get it checked out, and yep, I needed a root canal.

I went back in at noon, got the root canal done (I was lucky enough to have four roots), then got a plane about 4 hours later.

Good times, good times.

I also had all four wisdom teeth taken out in highschool. It literally floored me, I was messed up for about a week.

I'm in the same boat - bottom two out, top two still in. My dentist wanted to pull them because he said eventually they will cause problems. I'm hesitant because once you're over 40 pulling them is not a trivial exercise. They don't cause me any pain at this point and I go in for regular cleanings (3x a year) so I'm hoping to avoid it. I have much more annoyance from a crown that never was quite right...

Go to sleep with them, and wake up without them. And do this in the office of an Oral Surgeon.

Why? Because chances are that one of your other teeth are in the way and preventing the wisdom tooth from surfacing. This being the case, it may have to be removed out the side. In pieces. Bits of your jaw bone are likely to come out also. I don't think you want to experience that.

I guess I'm a genetic freak too. I only had one lower wisdom tooth. I had that one removed.

Now in my late thirties, and no sign of any others. I guess I'm more evolved???

Sounds like you have a case of Pericoronitis. The tissue above the partially erupted wisdom tooth got pinched and it swells. You may feel some swelling in your lymph nodes and the back of your throat. Hurts like crazy when its inflamed. Go on some antibiotics and gargle with a strong antibacterial like salt water or Blisterine. You should see some results in a few days. Now if the tooth is erupted and has an abscess, get it out as soon as possible. Either case, they should come out.
