Self Fulfilling Prophecy

THERE WAS A MAN who lived by the side of the road and he sold hot dogs. He was hard of hearing so he had no radio. He had trouble with his eyes so he read no newspapers. But he sold good hot dogs. He put signs up on the highway telling how good they were. He stood on the side of the road and cried, “Buy a hot dog, mister?” And people bought. He increased his meat and bun orders. He bought a bigger stove to take care of his trade. He finally got his son home from college to help him. But then something happened. His son said, “Father, haven’t you been listening to the radio? Haven’t you been reading the newspapers? There’s a big depression on. The European situation is terrible. The domestic situation is worse. Everything’s going to pot.”

Whereupon the father thought, “Well, my son’s been to college, he ought to know.” So the father cut down on his meat and bun orders, took down his advertising signs, and no longer bothered to stand out on the highway to sell his hot dogs. And his hot dog sales fell almost overnight. “You’re right son,” the father said to the boy. “We certainly are in the middle of a great depression.”

Have to agree. I don't much listen to the news anymore. It's just depressing and thrives on keeping the people trembling in fear that the end of the world is imminent in order to sell advertising time.

I think we've got very serious economic problems that are going to screw things up badly over the next few years, but they won't necessarily affect everyone the same way (there will be some winners for the big group of losers). But I ain't gonna' dwell on it. If things really go to schit, I've got a "Plan B", "Plan C", "Plan D", etc. all the way down to about "Plan P" or maybe "Plan Q". I've seen this coming and I have my options lined up.

If things get so bad that someone like me whose thought about this ahead of time, then things are obviously gonna' be REALLY bad. Like Biblical proportions bad. In that case, break out the ammo and it's everyone for themselves.

Lube,

Been saying that all along. This "recession" is being pushed by the media and some liberals who want to use it to get at Bush.

From where I sit the economy is slowing a bit but no where near a recession. As well we have not reached the true definition of a recession either, but the news media keeps waving the flag hoping that more and more people will salute.

Keep working hard and stop worrying about things...

If that's true, then I guess we should thank the media during the good times when the economy is roaring?

Because they sure play that up. "Housing at a new high," "consumer confidence at new high," "stock market at new high," "high end car sales at new high," "majority of people surveyed said they believed housing will continue to appreciate at 20% per year forever," etc. Is that a self-fulfilling prophesy, too?
