damn guys. help. we got hens.

my wife got some baby chicks. hens. what do i need to do? i guess for the first few weeks/days, i can use my dog kennel with a heat lamp. two hens, how big of a coop do i need? all you rural guys kick in with advice. i knew i should have been suspicious when my wife bought me a new car. she was buttering me up, for a life on a farm.

the best scenario would be that HER cat kills HER hens, and gets tossed out...heheheh.

We just started chicks this winter. We ordered 25. 15 meat birds and 10 laying hens. We only have 1 meat bird left alive and a couple in the freezer. MMMMM are they good. Our laying hens haven't started laying yet.

We put the chicks in a 60 gallon water basin with a heat lamp (red) until they were old enough to fend for themselves against the cats. Now there are in a chicken coop I just built.

I thought you need about 3 sq ft per chicken in a coop.

Can you believe there are BBS just like Pelican devoted to chickens? Just do a google search.

Yeah... only on PPOT.

So are the hens Democrat or Republican?

Saw an interesting DIY on raising chickens on the RFD channel:

http://www.rfdtv.com/

Thats right... the native born Los Angeleno city boy watches rfdtv, they have a series on raising bees too if you are so inclined

I also like the shows on classic tractors, steam trains, blacksmithing.

Urban farming.

I've filled my backyard with tomatoes, peppers, onions, and now grapes and blueberries. With the price of food these days, it just make sense.

What ever you do, do not let her name them or they will assume the status of pet and not food.
