i saw a man today with a box wired to his head.

ok, there are doctors here. the box was black, about the size of two player dice. it was hanging behind the man's left ear. about 1" behind it. then it had a gray wire, (to match his salt and pepper hair). from what i could tell, the wire ran up his head, straight up from the box about 2 to 3 inches and disappeared. i couldnt see it go into his scalp or anything because his hair got thicker. what do you think it was? some kind of permanent hearing aid? i sat behind him, at a conference. i didnt think to take a pic.

I think it's called Coclear or something like that. Rush Limbaugh has them implanted.

A hearing aid amplifies sound. This device completely replaces the ear and is wired into the nervous system, IIRC.

I saw a young guy recently, that had a hearing aid implant. His head was shaved, so you could see all. It as not square, but round (black as well). What you saw, could have been an implant.

One of the best pool players in the nation...Shane Van Boening, is 97% deaf. He turns off all hearing when playing, says it improves his concentration of the game.

To think...some of the folks he has beaten have the nerve to call this an unfair advantage...

Doesn't the overuse of Viagra induce hearing loss?

My wife's cousin got cochlear implant(s?) after being mostly deaf for 40 years.

Her second child is what drove this decision...she finally went 99.99% deaf (after being about ~85% most of her life) and couldn't hear when the baby was crying!

Cochlear implants are normally "clamped" to the skull via magnets so there is a large circle that is usually pretty visible, though it could have been hidden via the hair as well. It's also possible it's a device to prevent seizures. I've only seen one on a friend of my wife's, if he didn't have it he would have 20-30 seizures a day.

My wife is a Hearing Impaired Teacher, some of her problem children like to take off their implants and stick their head to the desk when they throw temper tantrums.
