Another Macbook question, please.
Would 1gb RAM be sufficient for word processing, spreadsheet and calendar program? 1gb for a PC using MS Office is just fine. Mac programs are more RAM hungry, is that correct?

Yes, I have 1 Gb and it's fine for me. You may need more once you start doing video/ image processing, but for word processing it's fine.

Yes, no problem. As Erwin stated, you only need to worry if you're going to have a whole crapload of apps open at the same time, or if you're working with any large files, like audio, video, or big pictures.

But DRAM is cheap, when you buy it from non-Apple. 1GB = $25 or so.

Yeah, who woulda thunk you could stick 4 gb of ram in a laptop for under $100.

Is DRAM hard to install in a laptop, though? And, will it void the warranty if I do the install myself?

Which model are we talking about? Standard install is to 1) turn off 2) flip over 3) remove battery 4) remove 4-5 small phillips 5) release clips on l/r side of ram, it'll "pop up" 6) remove ram 7) slide new ram in at an angle and gently push down till it clicks into place

One thumbs up I would give to Apple in the MacBook generation of laptops is they've made it VERY EASY for the user to install RAM or replace a hard drive. <5 minutes for anything.
On my old IBook, replacing the hard drive was about an hour-and-a-half process, but only after I got good at it. ![]()
