New (To Me) Bicycles - Yard sale finds!

My wife has recently got me somewhat interested in touring around yard sales early on Saturday mornings. Quite often all you find is other peoples junk but every now and again we come across something that makes our day.
So it was today. We'd been around a few and thought we'd call in to one more on the way home that she'd found listed in the classifieds in the local paper. We pulled up and it was pretty busy but the first thing I spot is a bicycle standing on the lawn. At first I thought it might be one of the neighbours who'd dropped by. Then I saw another leaning against a hedge, another on the drive, and a fourth laying on the grass and noticed that all the tires were flat. I asked if they were part of the sale, which they were, and they gave me a price for one and a second price if I bought all four. I normally negotiate on the first price I'm given but in this instance I accepted straight off.
I know that there are several of you on the board that are into bicycles so I thought that you might get a kick out of these...

Mongoose D40, a bit on the heavy side but not bad

Trek MultiTrack 750 - this has metal studs in the tires.

An early Specialized Stumpjumper with slightly soft Rock Shox. Obviously needs a saddle.

This was what caught my eye first of all. A late 90's Cannondale T1000 with a superb Brooks saddle

They were pretty filthy and still need a good clean but I've gone over them quickly this evening and they seem to be all there and functioning. Worst thing would be that a couple of them might need new tires. Apparently they belonged to the guy's Father but they've been sitting in his shed since he passed away and now he's moving - hence the sale - and he just wanted to get rid of a lot of stuff.

So what do you think would have been a fair price for the four of these?

Fair price? thats something different. At a yard sale selling father's old junk. Im guessing $75 for the lot.

I like the stumpjumper, I had an M2 back in college probably about the same age.

I was guessing the Stumpjumper was an M2 which I think would put it 1998/1999 similar to the Cannondale. I'm glad you think so too. I always wanted one when I was riding mountain bikes back then but they were way out of my price range at the time.

The 750 is likely 89-90, as is the Stumpjumper. Maybe '91 for the Stump. The M2 was an aluminum ("metal matrix") frame, and was newer. That looks like a cromo one. My guess would be $50 for all 4. Only the Cannondale has any "value" to someone who's looking for that particular bike - the rest are strictly commodity transpo. I sold a fair number of 750s when they first came out. Nice commuter bike.

I think the Mongoose might be a department store bike (sorry to be a downer ), but the others look like good finds. In particular, the Stumpjumper with the Rockshox RS1 could be worth something. (Although that generation of Stumpjumper might have been a bit later than the RS1; the fork might have been added later.) I'd do a search on ebay and see if the fork is worth anything. You might be surprised.

For the Pelican of vintage mountain bikes, try here:

I bet there are a couple people that would pay more for that Rockshox than you paid for the entire package.

Have fun,
Jim

Wow, I think you guys are grossly underestimating the price. The mountain bikes are not particularly valuable, but the Cannondale looks to be a nice find. I would think the Cannondale is worth at least $250. If it were here in Seattle, more.

I'd be interested to find out exactly which model Stumpjumper I have here. It definitely isn't an aluminum frame. I was thinking about letting my parents keep this with their travel trailer as campsite transport.
I tend to agree about the Mongoose, it was the least desirable of the four from my point of view but I figured that it was worth picking up even if it's for my eldest son to ride when the boys come to stay.
The Trek is the one my wife has her eye on. It's a nice bike without a doubt. She might change her mind and end up with the Specialized once she gets a chance to ride them later today.
It was the Cannondale that I really wanted. It's probably older than 1999 as it has the Ritchey Logic crankset which would seem to make it more mid-90's. I haven't had a decent road bike since I was a teenager.

So, the deal was $30 each or $100 for all four. Not too bad I didn't think. Like you guys have said, I believe the Cannondale is easily worth that alone.

The cannondale maybe worth something, you'd have to pay me a disposal fee to take the other 3.

Any one of those would be over $50 if you bought it used on, say, craigslist. Trust me, my StumpJumper was stolen a few years back and I always have my eyes open for a new (old) bike.
