Agreed. No amount of 'training' will change that. A lot the comments posted imply just the opposite.

Kids that can swim + supervision + fence around the pool = no worries. While I think Wayne is definitely going the MIT route to solve a relatively simple problem, having a special needs child definitely changes the equation. My 4 year old couldn't last for an extended period of time in the water, but he could pretty easily swim himself to the side if he fell in. Ultimately I agree with Matteo though, I wouldn't have bought a house with a pool if I didn't want a house with a pool. In my case I didn't want a pool, and passed up a number of nice homes because they did.

Matt I agree about the 4yr old comment. But Wayne's youngest is 1yr old. That is why I said that it would be a danger for a while.

We have a pool and we have been all for getting our girls familiar with water from the beginning, but to this day (both of our girls able to swim) we lock the fence around the pool and they are prohibited from going eveen near the fence if we are not there.

Pools are dangerous. If you have kids then they are even more of a concern. I am sure Wayne thought this through when they bought the house (sure there were no 4 bed + 1 office and no pools homes for sale in So Ca??? )

It also seems to me that he went through a lot of different solutions and laternatives for covering said pool.

I am not an engineer so I cannot comment on the soundness of the structure...

I say good luck and I hope the pool underneath will still be usable when you decide to lift the deck (having said that usually the biggest expense when building a pool is digging it up... so no worries there).

Nice pool, yeah looks like a crazy project. But I understand why you would want to do this. Curious why you did not build the deck over the pool and use the edge as supports and you could shape it any way you want instead of conturing the pool. It would be much easier to remove/repourpose the deck that way too when your kids could use it.

My thoughts also. Fabricate a stainless bracket, hang off the pool edge and the deck surface is flush to the pool deck.

Wayne chopped up all the wood to make a giant bonfire, and will use the pool for skateboarding and motorcross jumping
