Supremes will decide DC v. Heller today?

Supreme Court to issue decision on D.C. gun case
1 hour, 24 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court is meeting to issue its final three opinions of the term, including defining Americans' right to own guns.

The challenge to the ban on handguns in Washington, D.C., is the biggest case left on the court's docket. It also is expected to resolve disputes over a campaign finance law and contracts negotiated during the Western energy crisis in 2001.

The justices won't return to the bench until Oct. 6, the start of their next term.

Today's the day?

Assuming the ruling nominally goes against DC, how long before DC residents can actually legally own guns?

Yeah, I'm willing to bet that they restructure the law, claim it's different, and it will be another 10 years (minimum) before the new law reaches the SCOTUS.

You mean like the social engineering liberals did when told they couldn't use race as a factor in school admissions?

So we can't overtly discriminate against whites, what proxy for race can we use, however thinly veiled, so that we can still discriminate against whites but claim we're actually not?

And the gun owners win! I'm told no weird ambiguity either.

Why do we need to spend tax dollars to determine something so clearly defined in the Constitution? Someone with 2nd grade reading comprehension can understand "the right to bear arms".

I am too. But what good is it if words as clear as "shall not be infringed" can still allow 20,000 gun laws?

This is only the start. Now that the DC gun ban has been reversed, how can places like NYC and Chicago have a leg to stand on?

I'm still skeptical that this is gonna make it any less than nearly impossible to own, forget carry, a handgun in the gun ban cities. Where's the compliance/enforcement mechanisim? What happens WHEN, not if, DC, Chicago, NYC, etc. drag their feet on allowing handguns?

The DC gov't website posted the Slip Opinion on Heller, too. Nothing on their website yet addressing the next steps.

Rick, we both know that a 100% free for all, walk into 7-11 and buy a gun is not in the best interest of the country.

Infringe isn't the soft and cuddly word you think it is either. This law clearly violated DC Citizens' right to bear arms. A waiting period and background check does not.

I'll say it again. In my book, you can own any gun you want, any, but, and in my book, a 7 day waiting period and background check are reasonable precautions to protect the public at large.

How does one actually purchase a handgun? I have no clue on the procedure. I'm not in a rush to buy one, but my wife and I think it's a good idea to keep one at home so when the Potomac River floods DC, Katrina beer guy doesn't come over and steal our Guinness.
