Trouble at teens job
My 18y/o daughter works for a veterinarian this summer. She and another girl were to take 2 dogs out of thier cages and take them outside for exercise. My daughter had the larger of the two dogs. Her dog broke loose and bit the smaller dog. It cause a minor skin puncture on the smaller dogs neck. My daughter was terrified that she would be fired. The smaller dogs owner took the matter in stride and accepted the vets offer of free treatment and then all would be forgotten.
I was relieved to hear that my daughter didn't get *****canned for the incident. I was disturbed to learn that the vet was charging my kid 80$ for the meds used to treat the wound. Any thoughts on the matter? Would you make an employee pay for an error of this nature? Have you ever had to pay for a mistake on the job?

If taking the dogs out for exercise was part of her job, and approved by the employer, it is illegal to charge for the medicine or any damage. As a contractor, it is illegal for me to charge an employee for damage that occurs during work. For example, broken window, damaged furniture,or even screwing up an installation of new material, etc.

What an ass. I wouldn't want to work for him/her.
Is it possible that the vet is trying to get your daughter to quit? I can't imagine a boss being so petty.

The DVM is a jerk. A good lesson to learn at that age - that even highly educated and high earning professionals can be aszholes.. She should not pay. No way.

If your daughter was a trained professional veterinarians assistant, then I would say yes, she should know how to handle animals.
However, it sounds like she's just an 18 y/o kid with a summer job. The vet is responsible for anything/everything that she does (unless of course it is a blatant negligent act). In this situation, I say the vet pays. I broke a $2000 designer lamp when working in a furniture showroom once. The owner (a very nice fella) must have liked my tight jeans/workbelt or something and only charged me for the shade ($200). Some mark-up, huh? Last edited by Danny_Ocean; 07-01-2008 at 09:36 AM.. |

I know meds aren't cheap, but I wonder if he's attempting to recoup more than "his expense"? He's wrong either way, but that would REALLY pi$$ me off even more, and $80 is just too conveniently a "nice round number" imo. He's a jerk...

I agree with Gaijin. It's a good lesson to learn at a young age.
When my wife quit her first job after a few weeks because a MUCH better offer with H1 sponsorship came, her boss told her she'd have to pay the cost of advertising to find a replacement for her. I had a good time writing that letter. Never heard from them again and she got all the money she had coming to her.

The vets a jerkoff! I'd have her look for a new employer.

Thanks for the responses. They fell in line with what I was thinking. What an azzhat. At 6$ per hr this is quit a stiff penalty. If I get involved she will lose her job but I sure hate to have my kid walked on. I guess as a parent I will have to let her decide what she deems important to her. The pricipal of the 80$ payback or the job. I'm sure she will take the job as she works with her friend and flexible summer jobs can be hard to come by.
I am turning into ANGRY DAD!

It would violate minimum wage laws for him to do that. It's a cost of doing business - for him. His remedy for an employee mistake is to dicipline the employee. He does not have the right to recoup expenses from employees.

I'm guessing the vet has a boat payment due this week.

If she is going to pay for the business' expenses, then I would think she is also entitled to a share of the profits. Send him a bill.
Also, when she does finally quit...be sure to 1099 him for the $80 bucks. |
