I just downloaded AOL radio on my 1st generation iPhone. I am so happy I can listen to KROQ on my iPhone here in Austin! I can't believe how clear it is. :)

Can anyone suggest a good weather app that shows conditions hour by hour? I like the look that weather.com has.

Recorder is cool, and gets better all the time.

I used Yelp! for quite a while, until urbanspoon added a "Near Me" button; it seems to give LOTS more results than Yelp.

+1 for AOL radio. Really worth exploring the stations. App can be a little flakey, bit rates low, but still a good one.

Trailguru is one of my favorites. Lets you track you track your time/distance/avg. speed, etc.....

I ride my road bike along bike paths, and its pretty much impossible to drive a car and get an accurate read on the distance. Also great if you just go out for a run/walk and want to know how far it is. Only negative? It has to be the 'active' app to record. So if you take a call and forget to switch back to the trailguru app, its stops recording. Bummer.

- Bakelight - antique phone dialer looks funky, but I had some trouble using it

- Shakespeare - slow but fun quotes from the Bard and pocket info/text

- TideApp - handy tide tables

- Speed - obvious, but pay attention to your driving

- RulerPLus, Tape measure - turns unit into a ruler

- RulerPlite - turns a pic into a ruler - photogrammetry

a friend is addicted to Bubblewrap...

i.tv is very good. It's a tv guide and movie directory. Fast, and you pick your satelite or cable provider. the app figures out your location.

Gives reveiws and tells you local theaters that have movies.

You can have it send an email to remind you when a show is coming on.

I'm not a big tv watcher, but I find I'm using this alot.



Dictionaire. Free dictionary. Vocabulary is not exhaustive, but decent.

Writingpad. Way easier than using the standard soft keys for typing. Currently only works for email and taking notes. It would be great if you could make this the standard keyboard for the phone.

I see it on your screen shot but you didn't mention my favorite "Bloomberg". Lots of great news and data but at times it's been very difficult to get updates during recent volatile days on Wall Street.

I'll second WritingPad - Apple needs to license this! IIRC, IBM developed this tech.

CameraBag is a great app for applying various filters (Helga, Lolo, Ansel, 1962, 1974, Fisheye, Cinema and Infrared) to photos - really makes the iPhone's 2MP camera extremely useful. This is one of my favorite apps for photos.

Google Earth is out, free.

Panolab is good for stitching iPhone photos.

I've been using RunKeeper to track my runs; it's a GPS based app that uploads each run's telemetry to RunKeeper.com and interfaces to Google maps showing your course, speed and elevation. It still may be free - excellent app!

PhotoFrame turns your iPhone into a digital photo frame when its charging in its dock.

PhoneAid provides CPR instructions as well as other first aid tips.

Cosmovox is a highly configurable digital theremin.

WunderRadio is an IP based weather radio with an IP based scanner for listening in on LEOS and emergency services.

JellyCar is a great free app with game play based on soft body physics - this is really fun.

Trace is another excellent free game where your draw your own path to get your character to a destination - many worlds and multiple levels.

I have Motochaser = fun game - The kids like it - I also downloaded a few episodes of sponge bob - they think it's great fun to watch "TV" on my phone...

I use Say Where which let's you speak an address into the phone then goes to google maps and give you directions from your current location. Great for driving!

Around Me is also amazing, it gives you everything from bars, hospitals, restaurants, banks, movie theaters etc. and even a Nearby link that tells you where the tourist attractions, such as Painted Ladies, Parks, and other historic sites near you. A great function if you are touristing around.

iStockmanager from TD ameritrade is awesome too. Make trades from your phone and check stock prices, news, charts etc. and see them move up and down in real time!

Then there is a free Constitution app that puts the constitution and amendments right in your pocket for whenever you need to argue PARF style in a local pub.

Wikipanion another great app for those who need to win an argument, or if you forget where Sardinia is etc...

These are all free apps and I use them all the time.

The only app I paid for is the Texas Hold'em 4.99 app which keeps me busy when I'm riding shotgun on a long trip.

Some not mentioned:

-Speed dial: icon to dial you most frequent # easily (to make the iphone as useful as, well, a phone)
- I bowl: free and fun
- Evernote was mentioned, very cool for text, audio and picture notes on the fly (searchable)
- MeetBubble: free level with bubble, very cool
- CannonGame : just because you blow **** up
- Dynolicious: dyno, seems OK, not free, but the phone must be secured to the car to produce reliable numbers....
- Showtimes: movie times + reviews based on your location
- Koi pond: my 18 month old kid loves to mess with the fishes
- urban spoon/around me/yelp for local food joints

Woohoo got my 3g today. Wow this thing is awesome. I haven't gotten iTunes setup yet but that is next on my agenda. Is it better to download apps straight to the phone or do it on my laptop?

Getting his and hers iPhones for me and she, next week.

Is it a big deal to get the 8GB versus the 16GB? How much space is taken up by 100 songs, 100 photos, 10 hours of movies? I gather its non-expandable (irritating).

John - do you use a compression scheme or Lossless? The latter eats up space & I have a 16 G iPhone. But, I don't have to change all the songs' formatting...

I use whatever the iTunes default compression is.

If anyone is contemplating an iPhone, I would suggest checking out the Android-based (Google/T-Mobile) HTC G1 first. Pretty amazing phone with tons of great (and free) apps.
