Check out Amplitude, $0.99 I think. Allows you to greatly increase the gain on the iPhone's microphone to use for eavesdropping purposes (need headphones). More interesting, it displays the waveform of the heard audio on a oscilloscope screen. So if you can whistle, you can have fun creating pretty sine waveforms.

Installing 3.0... Figures it would go through right as I am about to leave for lunch....
"Updating iPhone software..." "Verifying updated iPhone software..." "Updating iPhone firmware..." |
Now that OS 3 can connect to external devices, it would be really cool if someone could develop an affordable version of the LM2 air/fuel meter.

How do you grab the screenshot?
|
Push the main power button on the top and the regular (face) button at the same time.
|
"NutSizer" measures fasteners and tells you the specs (size, thread count, etc...). Very useful to me...

Kay
the sideways keyboard in the 3.0 update rocks |
I've gotten so used to the non landscape keyboard that I'm finding cut copy paste far more useful. Dev team is supposed to release their update Friday, can't wait!!!!!

GRRRRRR. Just spent 2 hours on the phone with Apple. iTunes crapped out when updating the 3.0 software. Restarted it and the phone was in restore mode. Now phone will not update/restore. Receiving error (14). Trying one last thing before having to send it to Apple. Was working just fine this morning before I tried the update.
|
Same thing happened to me but I put it aside for a while, was able to shut it down with the top button and then went back an hour later and hooked it back up and all was OK. Store told me to do a restore but I couldn't get to that screen. Not sure what I did but it's fine now.
Hope you get it squared away. |
Ok looks like I am back up and running. I had to create a new user on my computer and sync the phone with iTunes. With that it restored the phone to factory defaults, named the phone something different when done. After that went back into my normal user and started restoring the backup I did before downloading the 3.0 software earlier. This is the first major glitch that I have had with the phone. Apple customer care actually called me back regarding this issue. Their customer service in resolving this matter was excellent.

Just enabled internet tethering and MMS without jailbreaking the phone. This is what the iPhone should have been initally
|
Can you offer some detail on how to go about tethering with iPhone. I've not done that before.

I used two different sites:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=721946&highlight=tethering For tethering http://www.krillr.com/blog/3DPQHBZ3/i-have-tethering-and-mms-on-my-iphone-and-yes-im-on-att (ensure you remove the .zip extension) For MMS All total took bout 10 mins (I take no responsibility if this kills your phone) Tested tethering over USB and Bluetooth, and had no problems sending MMS. |

Thanks very much, I'll give it a shot.

What is MMS? I'm real slow today.
Also, if anyone notices they are incurring ATT charges for this tethering and emm emm ess stuff, let the rest of us know . . . |
Ok.
Tethered to MacBook using Bluetooth. MacBook's WiFi turned off. iPhone WiFi turned off, connected via 3G. Speedtest.net run on Macbook's browser gives 790kb/s down. iPhone WiFi turned on, connected via our home WiFi network. MacBook still tethered via Bluetooth. Speedtest.net on MacBook browser gets 1.1Mb/s down. Switched MacBook's wifi back on, so MacBook connecting directly to home WiFi network, 11G. 7.6Mb/s down. iMac cabled to the cable modem, 22.2Mb/s down. Comcast is doing well by me. I think they've rolled out DOCSIS 3.0 here. For some reason I can't get tethering over USB to work. Also, one app (Radio France internet radio app) won't launch now - but haven't tried to launch it since upgrading to 3.0 anyway. Otherwise, all seems fine. Thank you Mr Wizard! |
MMS is picture messaging.
I'm not going to load that yet. Looks to be a little tricky. Working on the tethering right now. |
Lets see, I need to type a copy of this letter. Where did I put my carbon paper?
|
Picture messaging, who needs that. When we were young, if you wanted to message a picture to someone you had to walk 5 miles in the snow and beam it to them over IR.
|
So the tethering works like a charm.
|
Just tried it, slow as hell (no 3g here) but it worked!!!!
|
Buddy of mine with access to info says ATT will be looking for $55 per month for tethering
Friggin hate them |
The question is whether the iPhone notifies ATT that it is being used in tethered mode. If the only info that ATT has is how much bandwidth you are using, then I'm not concerned since I don't use that much, even on my laptop EVDO card.
