3.1 and 9 suck - wish I could go back in time. I know there are folks (Saurik and the Dev Team) working on solutions to this but I don't understand why Apple would care what I do with my phone - no other manufacturers seems to care. Windows Mobile devices are pretty much wide open from what I hear.
Since I downgraded to 3.1, I have considered looking at other phones. Simply not being able to multi-task and listen to Pandora while I text or surf blows. Not to mention the dropped calls. I lose several a day - everyone I know with an Iphone has the same issue. How is the coverage in your area? Are dropped calls common? |
Quote:
Here in Dallas I think I've had a half dozen dropped calls in 2 years and they were all while speaking with people in NY. So location, location, location. |
In Portland AT&T service has deteriorated noticeably in recent months. 1 of every 10 calls gets dropped.
AT&T and the other major carriers are rushing to add 3G capacity and to start rolling out 4G/LTE. They see the growth in mobile traffic and know they need to get in front of it. I'm hopeful of an improvement in the coming year. |
Tethering was disabled with the 3.1 update as well. Apple apparently took the feature out of ATT networked phones completely. Arg! And I needed it today.
|
Just bought my first IPhone today, a 3GS. My Verizon contract with a BB expired at midnight today. I've downloaded Iheartradio.com, the free level, the noise meter (paul von dunk), pocketdyno, my ipod music and pictures, a cool, sick game call maxinjury, and yelp. Gotta learn more tomorrow. I have to get my Disney email/calendar thing working.
|
Nice. I just heard today that Verizon will have the iPhone in Q3 2010. Can't wait....
|
That's awesome. I'll be eligible for a cheap upgrade (20 over the new contract price) at the beginning of Q4. I'd love to go back to an Apple product as long as they stop with the aggressive anti-jailbreak campaign.
|
Try Real Racing GTI -- good fun and free because VW is subsidizing it to promote the latest GTI. There is also a $6.99 "full version" that offers more track/car choices, but I'm too cheap to buy it so far . . .

This is a great app combined with Backgrounder (jailbreak app). |
I don't know if they have been mentioned, but the apps I use most are Google Mobil (voice activated search), Sigalert (traffic update), Redfin (ever wonder what homes are going for in that neiborhood you're driving through?), Darkroom (waits till the camera is steady to shoot, no more blurry pics) and Sportacular (up to the minute scores for a large variety of sports). All are free but I paid for Sportacular to avoid ads.
|
I haven't downloaded it but there is an ALMS app that gives you up to the minute leaderboards... I'll get it before the season starts next year. :D

Battery lasted through entire flight. Several movies and tunes going pretty much the entire time. I also have an external AAA powered recharger. Gives you 80% charge from almost dead. $29. |
Another way to extend your charge is if you are in a wi-fi area (home/work) turn off your 3g and vica versa. Running both when you don't need to runs down the battery a lot quicker.

Definitely turn it off when out of country or you'll come home to a nasty data bill. Data in Germany was either $19 or $29 a MB. Don't remember which, just remember getting the notification when I hit their network and being shocked. |

3g works great in the dallas area so my wifi is never enabled anyway. |
WM 6 shuts off the Data Radio if Wifi connected. You can see it on the comm manager menu.

T-Mobile is the DEAL with out of country data. If you are signed up for Blackberry International Data ($20/mth), you have international unlimited data. And 3G enabled in Mexico. Unfortunately, data inside the US is limited to EDGE, which blows compared to 3G. |
Android doesn't switch one or the other off automatically, but there's a widget to toggle them. Watching youtube in normal definition has been really nice and very snappy due to the separate video processor. I still can't figure out how to get movies to play though.

With AT&T you can add a plan but all it does is lower the inflated international roaming charges. So you pay more to pay less encouraging you to use more so you don't come in under the breakeven. |

Shazam is the coolest app. Ever been in a grocery store, bar or restaurant, maybe watching a movie and and hear a tune that you like but can't identify what it is or who its's by? Open up Shazam, it listens for 10 seconds, analizes for ten seconds and then displays the song, muscian and album and gives you a one push opportunity to buy it if your inclined. Neat the way it is able to filter out background noises including conversations. I've tried to trick it with some really obscure stuff but it works 9 times out of ten and it's free.

I loaded the 5-O, Radio app which lets me listen to many police, fire and emergency services. I can't get LA County Sheriff's Santa Clarita Division where I live. Anyone know if it's possible to find their internet broadcast so I can listen to what is going on where I live?
Thanks |
Looks like by a little blind luck I am getting a 3GS 16gb... Mom needs a new phone. She just went and bought the 3GS, but she knows I have my 8gb almost full already so she is going to take it and let me have the 3gs. :D
|
You will love the S. Everything is quicker than the G.
Not doing your Mom any favors though :( |
My mom has been using a BB pearl with no data plan... Its still an upgrade....

Nuance brings its speech-recognition technology to the iPhone | Software | iPhone Central | Macworld Nuance brings its speech-recognition technology to the iPhone Dragon Dictation, which arrived in the App Store Tuesday, is a mobile voice-recognition app that lets you compose e-mail or text messages by speaking. The app is compatible with the iPhone—sorry, iPod touch users—and requires the iPhone OS 3.1 update. The app is currently available for free, though Nuance says that’s for a limited time. |
Just tried the Dragon - only sent one text but the voice recognition was perfect.
Sent a second text and it missed one word but it has a nice editing feature via the keyboard. |
try this one - this app solves all of those pesky customer cards that just about every retailer gives you to put in your wallet.
