iTunes is 'restoring to factory settings' as I type (hehe, not quite factory)

It's stupidly simple to jailbreak this thing. If you can follow basic instructions quickpwn will walk break it down barney style.

rennch 06-19-2009 05:17 PM

Awesome. I'm checking it out. Thanks!

gr8fl4porsche 06-19-2009 05:22 PM

Typing this on the new S - I love it already!

What are some reasons to jailbreak?

HHI944 06-19-2009 05:38 PM

check out the apps available for jailbroken iphones

I didn't spend $400 today, have video recording, custome backgrounds and TONS of other slick features including tethering.

But, seriously, how are you liking the S? I've heard there's an app to kill the underclock on the 3g and it's basically the same speed as the S.

I am running Tmobile on my phone which is much cheaper than ATT I have a grandfathered unlimited textand data including MMS for $19 a month (not 3g but edge).

Backgrounder, it allows you to run apps in the background, so you can listen to your music and still run GPS. (Free from Cydia)

Smule makes a music app that turns your phone into a flute or a trombone 99c

Melodis voice dialer works great

Isamurai is a great two player sword game.

Dynolicious is cool but you have to have a solid mount platform to get a good reading. ($12.00)

Yellow pages is incredible, it shows you places, and how to get there driving, walking, or taking public trans. (Free)

XGPS is free turn by turn. Decent app (Free)

Also Jailbreaking allows you to use the Video3G which takes great video and sound and allows you to email or upload to youtube right from the app. (Free trial from Cydia)

My favorite game is Tiger Woods Golf it has to be one of the greatest games ever for a phone (on sale now for 6.99 usually 9.99) (App Store)

jyl 06-20-2009 05:14 AM

What are the disadvantages of jailbreaking, if any? Do you have to repeat it after every apple software update? Does it change the sync process? Are phones getting bricked?

The S has been fantastic so far - had it less than 24 hours.

I have only played with friends iphones so I can't really compare the S to last years phone.

I switched from the Sprint Instinct and while the Instinct has some great features that come with the phone, the iphone apps have allowed me to install the features that I was used to. The speed has been very impressive.

widgeon13 06-20-2009 02:09 PM

This is what ATT says about data access via the iphone 3G, how do they know if you are tethering or just using the iphone to access data?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245535694.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245535756.jpg

Tethering is not available in the US according to Apple but it is in other countries on the 3G. Changing the config in the iphone 3G seems to make tethering available.

Why would they care since data is unlimited anyway?

jyl 06-20-2009 02:34 PM

Avg iPhone uses 400MB/mo vs avg 40MB other smartphones. As iPhone users grow, expensive to keep network capacity up with usage. ATT spends $17-18BN/yr on capex, though only part of this is wireless. Not a small amount compared to $13BN/yr wireless data revenue. So their concern is that avg iPhone usage will leap to the GB/yr range with no corresponding increase in revenue - could bust their bank so to speak. And obviously they are also out to maximize profit like any business. So they want to find a pricing model that maximizes profit and also return on the capital investment. My guess is, charging $50/mo for tethering won't work, people will simply keep their laptop cards or go without or find workarounds. Whether the optimal price is $10 or $30, who knows. Maybe they start high and work down if they feel they need to. Free is very likely not optimal for ATT.

gr8fl4porsche 06-21-2009 03:08 PM

Just set up bluetooth tethering on my S - works great - no jailbreak needed.

HHI944 06-23-2009 06:34 AM

I didn't have to jailbreak to get tethering either. It was just a matter of changing some settings, then later I decided to jailbreak. Jailbreaking lets you do fun things to customize the phone much more than Apple allows.

red-beard 06-23-2009 11:22 AM

Why did it take 2 years to get Stereo Bluetooth on the iPhone?

HHI944 06-23-2009 11:30 AM

Only god and Steve Jobs know.

which model are u using jailbroken i have an 0G 8 gig unjailbroken and my buddy has the same model broken and its a pain to explain to him how to change the backgrounds since i havent done it to mine ,what wall paper package is that under and ones like it ? that winterboard thing?

HHI944 06-23-2009 12:07 PM

Download winterboard is a first. The wallpaper is from my photos. In winterboard it will give you the option of 'user wallpaper' and selecting that will use whatever you have as your lock screen. The rest are themes downloade from cydia. Once you download, just open winterboard and you should see the title of whatever you downloaded at the top, just click what you want to apply and exit. The springboard will restart, which is a little scary the first time, and when it comes back, your themes should be implemented.

Its a common problem. Head on over to macrumors.com, iPhone forum there are a few long threads about it there.

jyl 07-02-2009 01:02 PM

I wonder if the problem is OS 3.0 rather than the new hardware.

This morning I noticed my phone (3G not 3GS, updated to OS 3.0) was notably warm today (and I have a rubber case on it so the heat had to get through the rubber) and battery drained quickly. But, after a recharge, this afternoon it has behaved normally.

Maybe in some circumstances the OS doesn't manage power correctly. If so, is presumably fixable with a software update.

Try Instapaper -- you install a "Read Later" button on your regular computer's web browser and click it when you come across a blog or website that you want to read but don't have time for. All of your "Read Later" clicks are compiled and available to read in one place via the iPhone app when you're stuck in a long line and/or have free time later.

mca 07-03-2009 07:17 AM

CardStar is pretty sweet. And free.

You can plug in all of those bar codes from your keychain tags - grocery, gym, petsmart, etc. It automatically generates a bar code. So instead of carrying all of those tags you can simply use your ipod touch or your iphone.

People also think you are hacking their systems which is pretty cool too.

snbush67 07-04-2009 05:57 PM

Free- Pandora box is a search-able app that list all free or discounted apps in the app store.

Free- Smacktalk lite will have you rolling it is a great speech converter/recorder that has an animated hamster that repeats everything you say. Don't waste your time on the upgrade it does less then the free app. Its really sensitive, trust me you will like this one I don't care who you are! :D

Free- Candyclock is a really nice dimmable clock with animated backgrounds, it looks great on a desk or nightstand but uses a lot of juice so make sure its plugged in. SmileWavy

Just picked up a Griffin Aircurve dock at wally mart for 10 bucks. Sounds pretty good. A little tinish but not too bad and it looks like art.

stomachmonkey 09-01-2009 05:58 PM

I think this one is pretty cool.

Turns your iPhone into a hearing assistance device.

Clever application of tech.

porsche4life 09-16-2009 09:25 PM

EleMints is a cool app for people that need a Periodic table and Chemical formulas.

gr8fl4porsche 09-17-2009 04:43 AM

Voice control is not on 3G.

Do not upgrade to 3.1 if you enjoy your JB.
