"Sports" that should not be in the Olympic Games

Someone had the following thoughts on the issue, I am inclined to agree.

Right here we go;

Team sports, gone, all of them, you have your respective championships and titles to win you have no place at the olympics, I include tennis in this group.

Equestrian - horses are not humans, enough said.

Synchronized swimming - I realize it must take skill but that doesn't excuse its sheer stupidity

Walking - nearly as stupid as sync swimming, why not also have a hopping or sack race.

Cut back swimming - get rid of the different strokes, call it all freestyle and get to the other end in any fashion you like, to have inferior strokes like breast stroke and back stroke competing in their own class is as stupid as a walking event, they're just getting greedy and padding out the program with what we refer to in musical terms as 'filler'.

If you throw it, shoot it, jump it you're cool, if you use a bat or a racquet please bugger off.

Fighting is as pure as sport gets and should be maintained but changed to full contact in all disciplines and UFC should also be introduced as a matter of urgency.

Gymnastics is f**king awesome and definitely stay but the 'artistic' components like ribbon and ball etc are off the agenda. They can join up with sync swimming, walking and equestrian to form a breakaway competition for stupid 'sports'.

What the summer olympics needs is something like boarder-cross...

If it puts bums in seats and helps align the masses, absolutely buddy.

I have a feeling much of the original post was tongue-in-cheek, but I also agree with a lot of it. Synchronized swimming can stay - I'm not a big fan, but it's true athleticism. Team sports that have pro (or other high-profile) leagues have no place, agreed, though maybe keep the women's versions in, because they often don't have high-profile leagues and deserve the attention (watch women's hockey - way more fun than the men's!). But don't throw out team sports like relay.

I thought it was just me who thought many of the "Olympic" sports were silly

ya know i wouldn't mind not seeing basketball at the olympics. i do kinda get your point that so many 'team' sports have been turned into something that is not in agreement with the celebration of the human form that is the olympics.

I know a way they would get people to watch. Go back to competing naked. I'd be watching most women sports then. I dont really mind most sports in the olympics. I just like to watch them compete and hope the US wins more than not.

Only sports that have an objective measure of performance should receive medals. If your event results in a time, distance, or points scored like in a hockey game, fine. But I'm sick to death of watching 90 pound pre-pubescent girls running around in leotards waving long ribbons while the commentators gush; "Oh! That was magnificent! This might earn her the GOLD!" Makes me wanna vomit.

But figure skating would fall into that category, would it not? And I doubt many would argue for its elimination. Well, I might...

x2

Anything requiring judges for scoring is an exhibition, not a sport or game.

The world sends their best figure skaters to the olympics. A great honor for the skaters. Give them all a medal that recognizes that accomplishment. A participants medal. They are olympians.

Womens beach volleyball should be a combo of judges scores and game points.

BMX - WTF? (Sorry Byron)

All of the big money sports (baseball, tennis, basketball, etc) should be eliminated from the olympics. There's a movement afoot to make golf an olympic event.
