They stoled my mail right in front of me
Saturday a.m. I'm mowing the lawn. Mail dude drops off the mail. I think "I'll get it as soon as I'm done mowing." Ten minutes later, a car pulls up to the box, a chick leans out of the passenger-side window, opens the box and grabs the mail. The car takes off. I'm yelling at them but they don't seem to care about my feelings. I got a good look at driver and passenger, got the make, model and approximate year of the car and did my best to memorize the plate number - repeating it out loud as I ran into the house and called 911. Bottom line - nothin', I got nothin'. The High School intern CSO that called me six hours later said the plate number I gave came up empty.
I live in a rural area and property crimes are common. Mail theft happens all the time. The Sheriff's Department does nothing. This incident reaffirms my thoughts on several issues (including the need for a secure box which will be done asap).

I would call the FBI, it's a federal offense also advise the local PO. Local authorities won't do s--- in those situations. It's only a phone call and if they tell you they don't have time drop your congressman a line.
I'm sure others here will think I'm overreacting, that's fine with me. |

Tangent:
In my younger years (12-13) a buddy and I stole some mail as a "betcha won't". Of course a neighbor saw us and the cops went to my buddies house and he in turn blamed it all on me. I took the wrap and got threatend with prison, yadda yadda, it is a federal offense. I ended up working in the persons yard for the summer and everyday I would look across the street at my buddy playing in the pool. Turning point? He now is an unemployed plumber with 3 kids. I am who I am. Funny how things are. |

We still have our unsecure box...and did have mail stolen once. These days, we never put anything financial in the box with the flag up...not even a small check...those wait until we can make it to town. We have our bank hold new checks for us, so we can pick them up there, etc. Still, I probably should make the move to a more secure and tougher (plate steel) mailbox.
FWIW, I do feel your anger. I was P.O.ed for weeks...since the stolen mail contained a small Gerber pocketknife that I was mailing to a friend. ![]()

I gotta believe this local agency just is not communicating properly with the feds. This is not a city or state issue. Federal mail service, federal investigators. Generally, they have no sense of humor when it comes to tampering with the mail. I suspect you would get a more satisfying reaction if you alerted the post office and the FBI.

It could be a lot more than stolen mail. A new drug drop method is to mail the drugs to a complete random stranger and then for the intended recipient to snatch it from the stranger's doorstep or mailbox before the homeowner gets it. Big sting on this in MD a few weeks ago, but SWAT got the wrong address and shot the town's mayor's dogs.

Clearly, the best way to avoid a reoccurrence of this crime is stop mowing your lawn.

Put security alert on your credit files. I'd do it right now.

I've got a lockable letter box. It sounds a nuisance but the key is close by and just out of sight.

Have you called the Post Office?
If they STOLE mail, it's a federal offense, even from your box. It's their jurisdiction. Also, do you think there were credit card, etc. or bills in the mail? Check w/ CC issuers, maybe cancel card. Last edited by tcar; 08-11-2008 at 12:57 PM.. |

Believe it or not the postal inspector is one bad mo. He's got lots of authority to throw people in jail and the inspector takes this kind of thing serious from what I've been told.
that's who I'd be calling. |

Yeah, You don't want to mess with the Postmaster. People don't understand what he can do to you.

Update: I had someone at 911 dispatch listen to my call and check the plate number I gave with the plate number the CSO ran. Mismatch. She then ran the plate I actually gave and bingo - registered locally and connected with a Ford, which is the vehicle I identified.
