Thumbs down Verizon's NEW EVERY TWO SCAM.

So, I was up for NEW EVERY TWO in May. It's a deal where you get a new phone for free EVERY TWO YEARS. Good deal, right?

Not really. What they don't tell you (And I didn't look, yes, I'm stupid. totally my fault.)

Is that the NEW EVERY TWO program actually qualifies you for a free phone after 20 MONTHS.

So, this week, thinking I was 3 months out of my two year contract, I got an iPhone and switched to AT&T.

WHOOPS! You've got 1 month left on your Verizon plan. Give us $175 bucks.

I wonder how many people have made the same mistake I did.

California's superior court just ruled last month that early termination fees are illegal.

I thought they all pro-rated the termination fees now.

Well, 14 bucks sure would be a lot more tolerable.

Early termination fees are illegal for a non-regulated, optional luxury item?

That sounds like Kalifornia.

Cell phone companies are really shrewd about early termination fees.

I made my last payment of my two year contract. In the meantime, 2 weeks before my contract expires (even though its fully paid off) I switch companies and transfer my phone number.

They try to jew me out of $250 because I 'violated the contract.' A few F-bombs later I get reimbursed...

I never sign for more than 1 year. I'm on month-to-month now with Verizon, so I can toss 'em whenever I like. It costs a little more for the phone up front, but I like the peace of mind.

Call Verizon... It was AT&T that didn't tell you that there are two ways to keep your existing #. You can go back in, reinstate that line for the balance of the contract (just paying the monthly line fee) with a new #. (doesn't even need a phone for it) and Verizon will reverse the early termination fee. Don't need to yell and scream, they will take care of it.

How do I know...? Made the same mistake myself. Let my daughter change her line to AT&T, thinking that my contract was up. Wasn't....so after getting that large bill for early termination. (they do send you a letter explaining, with a number to call if you have questions.) I called, they were good about it.

Good luck

this new law while I agree with it, I think it will make phone co's subsidize less.

Which is fine! make those hispanics, jews, negros, and whiteys pay full phreaking price!

I just went through this. I ditched Verizon for T-moble because:

1. CDMA vs GSM (worldwide use)
2. Poor pricing even with my 17% corp discount
3. No sim cards :-(
4. New every 2 is a complete rip off

Last time I did the New every 2 (which is just a $100 instant discount towards a new phone) the phone I wanted was $400 with a $100 discount. SO I figured it would run me $200 right? Not so much. You can only use the new every 2 OR the other discount. So what exactly is the point? From that minute I was pissed off and decided to switch asap.

I just exercised my new every two benefit for two new phones, since we have two lines. I like Verizon.

When I had AT&T, I had to switch back to Verizon because of my job, which said they'd pay the early termination fee and they did. But I got slapped with a $400 collection action by the Simply Wireless store that signed me up. I told them they should just write it off since they'd never get a dime out of me. I had asked them what the early termination fee was when I signed up. They said $175. Had they said another $400, I'd have walked. No, I didn't read all the fine print in the mile-long receipt/contract they gave me.
