How long is to long for a P-car to sit?

I can't believe its happened to me, but after I restored my SC (engine body interior and transmission rebuilt) its now just sitting. I've started to set dates on a calendar to turn it over, but its not left the garage this summer. I don't have any spare time, of course I never really did before the resto.

Is it better to maybe sell it to someone who will drive it, or should I wait it out until my life changes? It seems kind of sad that its only had 1200 miles on it since the motor and gearbox were installed. I dunno, what would you do?

Why dont you drive it to work on fridays? And you must seriously question your priorities in life if you dont even have time to drive your 911 at all.

I've told myself the last three Friday's to drive it, and each time I've pussed out due to heavy traffic or heat. I suck.

It's a car. It won't crumble or melt if you drive it. Hell, drive it every day. That's better than your tires flat-spotting, the rubber bits going dry, and all of your fluids going bad.

naaa. hit the battery with a charger periodically. then when you get optimum conditions, take it out and blast around.

i hate driving my 911 in a traffic jam, and i hate a very hot day. both those are deal breakers.

i love the occasional "date night" with my wife. a coast side oyster run is tops on my list.

I bet I have flat spotting already, last time it rolled was in June when I had my garage floors done. Man I need a change of mind.

I've seen people restore cars before, then hardly ever drive them.

The restoration was the mental goal; looking forward to finishing, but...

Once that's done... well...

If you don't have any time for "fun" driving, as vash suggests, use it for practical driving. Otherwise what's the point of having it?

Mine was a daily driver until it morphed into a track beast. But even then I drove it every weekend without fail.

The restoration point made above is where I think I'm at, and I just realized that I did the same thing with my 951. Sold that to a fellow Pelican who drove it. I'm either going to drive it tomorrow or list it here, I just need to get out of this funk.

I think it will be fine to sit for a couple weeks or so. That's not long-term storage. But starting it isn't nearly enough. It needs to be driven. I've heard of people who just start their cars and let them idle for a few minutes. Of course, when they want to drive their cars, the transmission doesn't work, or the suspension collapses, or...

It has to be driven. Period. Twice a month is enough, but I've had experience leaving a CIS car sit long periods of time and here's what you can expect:

Fuel and CIS problems. Will miss, and/or not want to idle.
Brake caliper pistons start dragging.
If you had a few minor oil leaks, they will be worse when you do drive it. I even had oil leaking from the 915 at one point.

If you have to, put it on the calendar, and head out every few weeks on a 1/2 drive or so. You need to to more than just charge the battery and/or idle it in the garage....

I wouldn't simply start it and let it idle occasionally...even worse than just sitting imo. Drive that baby and bring her up to temperature !!!

Scott,
Bunch of Pelicans and others are driving up to Frisco next Sunday (24th) for breakfast. Come with us.

Here's the message from our Yahoo group:

Hi all,

Andre has done it again! Here's another drive and breakfast event for all those to enjoy...

Dear Erik:

I would like to organize a ride on Sunday, August 24, 2008. We will meet at El Rancho at the Evergreen exit of the I-70 at 7 a.m. and leave at 7:30 a.m.
We will drive up Squaw Pass and then down to Idaho Springs, then up past Georgetown, over Loveland Pass and Swan Pass, through Breckenridge and then have breakfast in Frisco. We will then return to Denver after breakfast.

I would be grateful if you would send the invitation to all the Porsche Breakfast Club members.

Thanks once again for you help,

Best regards,

André Nieuwenhuizen

Great Scott!

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/porschebreakfastclub/

Sign up, usually 2-4 things going on each month.

Meet once a month for breakfast (15-40 cars) at Village Inn - Colorado and I-25.

Coffee and Cars once a month - Lafayette, CO, on the way to Boulder.

Was a drive 2 weeks ago to the Stanley Hotel, Estes Park.

Tom

FWIW, new gas is just awful. It clogs stuff up much more from sitting than gas did in the past. I would definitely use some Stabil in it. As far as starting it up on occasion, you need to get the temps up high enough to cook off any moisture. If you don't let it get hot while running it, the existing moisture will not burn off and when it cools, you will get more moisture due to condensation.

I drive it more now than when I got it six years ago. I try to drive it to work several times a month - even when it's over 100 degrees. It would suck to sell it years later and think I didn't get the most out of it.
