Not that it is going to talk you out of anything, but that is a really sweet package, and a real looker to boot.

Is it what the doctor ordered ?

I'm writing a book on Boxsters right now (101 Projects for Your Porsche Boxster). I can tell you first hand that these are fantastic cars. They have their handicaps, but they are incredible value for the money these days. The 'S' model is the one to get, that extra power is really useful. We had my wife's 1999 2.5 out at the Streets of Willow last time, and it basically blew everything away with handling and power (even with the 2.5). It had a Tiptronic too, which made the whole track 10X easier to drive. The transmission actually adapted to the track and went to redline when you needed it. I was very, very, very surprised at how good the car actually was.

We're now building a super-Boxster for the track (911 engine, Tarrett sways, PSS9, Brembo brakes, etc.), and this thing will be a rocket! I'm betting a lot of resources on the fact that the Boxster (and 996) cars will be very good and well-sought after club cars and street cars for quite some time...

Well, I wish you'd get on with it. :D ;)

Buy the car if you like it. Who cares if a half dozen guys on an internet forum don't like it?

As one of the half dozen, I am happy to have done my small part in honoring his request and helping the man out.:D

speeder 08-22-2008 05:32 PM

It's as queer as a nine dollar bill.

You know, he's really wanting for our approval. Things are not always what they seem.

Or a football bat.

I believe there are studies indicating that even thinking about buying one can cause testicular shrinkage.

wow, there are people out there who would pay $70K for a Boxster?!? Amazing. I think even most Boxster fans here would have a hard time saying that's a good move.

speeder 08-22-2008 09:56 PM

$70k buys a showroom condition 2005 GT3 in black/black w/ a few thousand miles on it and every mega-dollar option. You would have to be absolutely retarded to consider a $70k Boxster, I don't care how well it drives.

I knew you guys would eventually come through.

Thank you!

I would love to drive a Boxster, just to see what it's like. I really like them...

Go to your dealer and drive an 'S'. I always denigrated these cars a bit until I realized just how good they were. Fast, nimble, planted, chuckable, utterly forgiving in a way that no other Porsche I have driven ever felt.

Absolutely love the RS60. And they're coming out with a white 'S' special edition this fall that looks pretty cool as well. And white is the new black after all.

Of course there is the image issue which many of you have pointed out. But who really gives a feck about image when the car is bloody near perfect?

Here's the new special edition in white.

Personally, I tend to think that any person that drives a car because he or she cares AT ALL what other people think of the car, or what "status" or "image" that car conveys upon the driver, is an idiot.

You should drive a particular car because you enjoy driving the thing. Period.

I have noticed yellow is the new red too :D

I plan on owning a Boxster S someday... but a used one is all my budget can stand.

That's a very effective counterpoint to buying a new Boxster!

The fact that you need to put it up in the air to work on it and, according to a lead Porsche tech. at a nearby Porsche store, there’s more often than not the need to drop the engine – just hearsay, but seems a reliable source. A friend who has a top & upholstery shop that mostly services dealers tells me that every time he picks up a customer car from Porsche there are Boxter engines sitting around the shop. The mechanic I mentioned (my buddy’s friend) wouldn’t own one based on what a pain in the mule they are to work on; and he’s a very experienced factory trained tech.!

I’ve never driven one but everything I’ve heard and read is positive re their performance and handling (I hear that the base model is kind of short on hp).

From strictly an appearance standpoint the Boxter never particularly excited me. However, when they roofed it and called it the Cayman it became, in my opinion, the best looking of all the Porsches.

Are you going to get the "Stability Package" allowing make-up application at speeds up to 35mph?:D

exactly - get a Cayman -- unless you just have to have a convertible (I did)

if a conv. is mandatory, then get a used one and have a 996 or 997 motor put in it. or get a rufster pre-made

the S has nice brakes and the good (porsche) transmission, not the Audi one + some other tidbits - it is still underpowered -- the car is really well balalnce and could easily take 400 to 500 hp. at that point you can go kill Gallardos.
