Boxster S RS60 Spyder

I spent an afternoon driving one of these a month or so ago and thought it was the most brilliant sports car I have ever driven. It was one of those perfect days, and the roads were empty, and this car just did everything right.

So I have a serious itch. And now, God help me, there is a beautiful one for sale just around the corner.

Would someone please talk me out of buying this thing?

Please?

It's your money...unless you borrow it.

BRPORSCHE 08-21-2008 10:13 PM

If you buy it would you have to sell the S?

Clarkson also loved the RS60. Seems like an awesome car to drive.

What makes it an RS60?

No help here.

I drove a standard Boxster for 2 years and I miss it. People rip Boxsters, but they really are great sports cars.

Lots of small really nice cosmetic improvements plus, extra horsepower (303), PASM, bigger wheels and sport exhaust.

Doesn't sound like much, but the whole package is very, very fine. More than the sum of it's parts — and has a significantly different feel to a regular Boxster.

But I was hoping everyone would tell me it's a girlie car. Or something like that.

Real kick to drive. I drove an S for an afternoon, too, and my SC felt sluggish after...

Miatas are fun too (in a low hp sort of way).

Unfortunately they both have the same 'image' issue.

I would love a high-miles, beater Boxster S. You could knock the ghey out of that car with some flat black paint and serious track mods, it would absolutely rule the streets. (In a hypothetical way, of course, I don't condone breaking traffic laws).:)

It is a girly car. When I pull up to you in my twin turbo, you will feel a little inferior. Stock is 420hp, I have about 550 in it with upgrades. triple black, very aggressive.

I'm just trying to talk you out of it!SmileWavy

;) There is no such thing as a girly car, a car is a car, although some people may believe there is such a thing, but I think that they have other issues to deal with.
If you like it buy it, even if you do get a loan, you only live once, and you are not taking anything with you when your gone.

Shhh.. we're supposed to be talking him out of it!

How much is it new, $70K? There are so many nice used "S"'s on the market for half the price. And I don't think in this day and age the low production numbers of the car are going to help in retain much value. Especially if you can just go out and buy one now.

jwhcars 08-22-2008 11:34 AM

Go ahead and buy it......there is nothing wrong with having more than one Porsche.
A friend of mine took delivery of his RS60 last month and he is very pleased with it.

These cars are known to cause testicular shrinkage, especially in males.

I'm writing a book on Boxsters right now (101 Projects for Your Porsche Boxster). I can tell you first hand that these are fantastic cars. They have their handicaps, but they are incredible value for the money these days. The 'S' model is the one to get, that extra power is really useful. We had my wife's 1999 2.5 out at the Streets of Willow last time, and it basically blew everything away with handling and power (even with the 2.5). It had a Tiptronic too, which made the whole track 10X easier to drive. The transmission actually adapted to the track and went to redline when you needed it. I was very, very, very surprised at how good the car actually was.

We're now building a super-Boxster for the track (911 engine, Tarrett sways, PSS9, Brembo brakes, etc.), and this thing will be a rocket! I'm betting a lot of resources on the fact that the Boxster (and 996) cars will be very good and well-sought after club cars and street cars for quite some time...

What would be your opinion for the "sweet spot" in years for the S with price vs equipment vs mechanical issues. I always have me eyes on a used S in the papers. And I would agree with Wayne. I've got my 30 year old 911 with $25k in upgrades barely outrunning a Boxster S with some track tires. (although I might still be having more fun.)
