Best way to paint chrome?
I painted the chrome bumper and grill shell of my Dodge Ram about 6 months ago and its starting to peel already. My process was sand all the chrome with 200 grit, clean, sprayed with rattle can primer, then shot it will a lacquer based paint using a gun.
Any products out there that help with the adhesion? |

Have the chrome removed at a plating shop first.

You'll be sanding a while. I don't think you can do it.

You did what I would have recommended. Perhaps you should have it professionally stripped as suggested?

I stripped the chrome on a whole car once and painted it flat black. I had it sandblasted.

I would think that you would need an etching primer to properly adhere to the chrome surface.

No, now that you ask, we just blasted it, roughed it up, and I painted it with Imron, I don't know if they still make it or what. I was making a Knight rider looking 73 El Camino, dark gray, louvered hood, and all trim blacked out. I liked it at the time.

Be careful if you have something like that sandblasted. You could end up with a wavey part. The thinner the metal, the more careful you need to be.

Re sand part (sandblast if you have easy access) and prime with something like SEM self etching primer. Good stuff. Without totally removing chroming and doing proper prep it'll peel eventually.

Confer with a powder coater. They might suggest prepping or not. Powder coating is much more durable than spray paint, but you have to remove from the vehicle.

Walnut hulls or glass beads work well. Sand can cause respiratory issues. There is also a soda blasting procedure but its designed to not damage chrome or glass.
