Expensive speeding fine

Need for speed costs Alberta man $12,000
Last Updated: Friday, August 29, 2008 | 3:46 PM MT Comments44Recommend29CBC News
A judge has allowed a motorcyclist caught speeding on an Alberta highway at 263 km/h to keep his licence — in return for a $12,000 fine

The Hinton man, 34, was stopped on May 1 on Highway 16 between Edson and Hinton, about 280 kilometres west of Edmonton, RCMP said Friday.

The posted speed limit is 110 km/h.

"The speed was unusual to begin with," said RCMP Sgt. Ron Lyons, pointing out that the maximum fine for speeding in the province is $25,000. "But I haven't seen fines that high, ever."

In June, the same traffic court handed a 25-year-old man from Prince George, B.C. a $8,500 fine for driving his Chevy Cobalt 206 km/h on the same stretch of highway.

I really gotta be careful... the roads are so straight and empty out here... so tempting.

The fastest I've ever driven a car was the straight stretch around Hinton. I knew the fine, if caught, would be substantial... but wow!

Here it's $7.70 per kph over the limit...it would have cost him $1255 and costs...... $5 per kph more if he went thru a construction zone.

I'm wondering how the guy got caught? I didn't think those old Ford Crown Vics could go that fast.

Those 'marconi devices' can do some amazing things.

In the old days, we would have made fun of the fact that it was Canadian dollars...

We have our new Street Racing Law. The police have the right to impound your car for 2 weeks on the spot.

Racing Offences:

Speeding 50 km/hr or more over the limit. Unsafe lane changes, tailgating and not driving to suit the conditions, such as going over the speed limit in a snowstorm and risking lives.

Infractions also include any kind of "stunt" driving, such as popping wheelies or doing "doughnuts" by spinning your vehicles.

Also falling under the law will be motorists who cut off another vehicle.

If convicted, there will be a $2K to $10K fine.

This has not yet been tested in court that I know of.

Ian

What could they do to you if you said "Screw you, that's abusive and I'm not going to pay it. Here take my license back, you can keep it". Is there anything else they can do? Throw you in jail? I suppose

Not sure if you're joking or just that out of touch...

Actually, your dollar is doing a little bit better these days, so that $12k CDN is only $11.4k US.

A month ago, it would have been cheaper to pay in CDN.
