Another Math help question?

Ok my semester is almost over, but I am in need of some assistance.

Describe in words the graph of each of these curves below. Include in your description the shape, along with other possible relevant information such as length, width, and center points.

a. Y = 3X2

b. (X-1)2 + (Y-8)2 = 16

c. (X+2)2 + (Y-4)2 = 36

d. Y = X2 - X

????

Is that y=3x times two or y=3x squared?

b. CIRCLE radius = 4 center at (1,8)

d. y=x^2 - x =x(x-1)
is a parabola, concave upward, with y-intercept (0,0) and x-intercepts (0,0) and (1,0)
The vertex or bottom of the curve is at (1/2, -1/4).
The axis of symmetry is x=1/2

google is easier than doing math.

Y = 3X2 is what is posted on the online class.

Confused. Plot for Y=6X or Y=6 times x plus 2?

Standard form nowadays is not the same as standard form was when I was a kid, chisling my homework on a rock.

my guess is Y=6 times x plus 2...this class will not end soon enough. Thanks for the help though.

A skinny Parabola. I suspect, based on the other equations, that the formula should read Y=3x^2. It seems unlikely that they'd ask about a straight line like "y=6x" in the same set that askes about circles and other second degree equations which is why I think the 2 should be a ^2. They also don't use the ^ notation on the circle formulas.

Quote:
b. (X-1)2 + (Y-8)2 = 16
circle
Quote:
The standard equation of a circle with center C(h,k) and radius r is as follows:

(x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2
Quote:
c. (X+2)2 + (Y-4)2 = 36
Another circle, but for this one the center is (-2,4)

Quote:
d. Y = X2 - X
This one is a bit different. It's got a vertical asymtope at x=0, and a horizontal asymtope at y=0. You can graph it here
http://www.freemathhelp.com/equation-grapher.html
just paste this in x^2-x

What are they asking here? For some reason this math stuff just confuses me beyond belief.

Find the equation for each of the following items below:

a. A line that passes through (1, 1) and is perpendicular to the line 3x+4Y=12.

b. A line that passes through (5,4) and has a slope of 2.

c. A line that passes through (9,8) and has a slope of -1.

d. A line that passes though the points (1,2) and (12,24)

e. A circle with a radius of 9 and a midpoint at (3,3)

Solve for the following items:

a. The point on the x-axis that is equidistant (equal distance) from (10,4) and (6,2).

b. The distance between the points (4,4) and (20,4).

c. The distance between the points (1,4) and (19,5).

d. The midpoint between (12, 4) and (18, 6)

e. The midpoint between (-8, -6) and (25, 3)

------- oops, didn't read carefully enough, that "perpendicular" part will get you every time. Rick's got it right.

b. A line that passes through (5,4) and has a slope of 2.
-------- same drill, but this time they give you the point and the slope, substitute in and solve

c. A line that passes through (9,8) and has a slope of -1.
------- ditto

d. A line that passes though the points (1,2) and (12,24)
------- now you have to use the info on this page http://www.purplemath.com/modules/strtlneq.htm and then scroll down to where it says " * Find the equation of the line that passes through the points (–2, 4) and (1, 2)."

e. A circle with a radius of 9 and a midpoint at (3,3)
------ check "example 1" http://www.analyzemath.com/CircleEq/Tutorials.html

Solve for the following items:

a. The point on the x-axis that is equidistant (equal distance) from (10,4) and (6,2).

b. The distance between the points (4,4) and (20,4).
------- http://www.purplemath.com/modules/distform.htm

c. The distance between the points (1,4) and (19,5).
------- ditto

d. The midpoint between (12, 4) and (18, 6)
------- http://www.purplemath.com/modules/midpoint.htm

e. The midpoint between (-8, -6) and (25, 3)
------- ditto

If you need more help, then I would suggest going to the library and looking at some algebra books for more problems. If you can understand how to do these problems, then go there and solve a new set of problems. That will help solidify the steps needed to solve these problems. If you still don't understand the steps to solve these problems, then get into engineering. You will know how to do these problems in your sleep once you graduate.

k9,

I am wondering why you need to take this classwork when it is not so fun for you? What grade are you in? Maybe you have changes schools and missed an important prexquisite class that you should ask your teacher or consuler about.

These are very importnat concepts that you should have a firm grip on before going to college. Are your SAT scores ok?
