How is this possible?

look for yourself tomorrow.

Just before sundown I can see the moon in the sky.
It's about a 'half moon', but the sun is up, too.

Shouldn't it be 'full'? How can I see both sun and moon at the same time and the sun casts a shadow at the same time?

Hmmm?

It's not possible.

Now, "just before" and "about" add up to "lots of range" which means you saw a 60% moon on the horizon an hour before sundown, which is possible.

Oh, and today moon is almost exactly half (47%)

Ohm I misread his post. I thought the moon was on the horizon when he saw it.

Yes, when the moon is first half full, it's always high in the sky during sunset.

The sun is extremely far away compared to the moon, making it effectively a point light source with rays effectively perpendicular to the moon. Maybe this will explain it better than words can:

I wanted to take shot tonight with the vineyards all lit up.

So, I saw both the sun and moon in the sky at the same time. Why the shadow?

Am I seeing a 'side view' of the moon?

I liked looking at it. Very nice.

Shadow? From the Sun? Because the light from the Sun is millions of times brighter than the light from the Moon. Technically, the Moon was casting a shadow too, but you couldn't see it since it was drowned out from the ambient light of the Sun.

Stand in a room with a 100 watt floodlight shining on one side of you, and a candle on the other side. Does the candle cast a discernible shadow?

Sounds like you were lit up in the vineyards. Isn't photography great.

That's great and all, except that he said it was near sunset, not noon

I know - the picture sorta' shows it better. Trekkor's position on the earth is deliberately shown close to the day/night line - in other words sunset (or close to it).

Hopefully that kinda' makes sense.

If you're using FF, search for persdict.dat and see if you accidentally added it...

Getting drunk in the vineyards and taking pictures or something.

It does look like it is spelled funny. Oh well.
