B7 Alpina BMW vs '85 928S2....
I generally don't go around drag racing people...but today, ladies and gentlemen...I had my HAT handed to me by the owner of something known as a "B7 Alpina" 7-series BMW.
THAT thing got up and left town! I was behind him at a light, and when it changed we both turned left. He immediately got in the right turn lane... -exactly where I wanted to be- and I'm like "would the Captain of the BISMARCK please get his battleship in gear!?". I was spring-loaded to smoke the Munich boat, since he was going way slower than the average person would. The whole time I'm staring at the "B7" on the back of the car. I figured "Yeah, nice....you can read European Car magazine, and order some numerals". I can read European Car too, but I've got a V8 that probably puts out something in the middle 300's horsepower wise, and the car is the size of a Honda Civic. The average 7 is just a road-block for my 928~ Well, we rolled through the curved entrance to US1 and I of course, got on it. It took the boat captain about a second or so to respond, but when he did holy ben-wa balls Batman! That monster got up and showed me its tail-lights! I have a problem with a high rpm/high manifold-pressure miss, and I was in that mode...but even if I hadn't been I suspect that big car would have walked away from my 928S2. My car is an "ROW" or gray market import, and it is probably just as fast as a 928GT or GTS. It turned a 13.86 @ 106 mph in a quarter mile up at the drag strip near Orlando one day... I don't know much about Alpina BMW's but I won't mess with them in the future! I wanted to stop and talk to the guy, he pulled into a shopping center about half a mile after we turned, but I had an appointment and didn't have the time. Hot car! N! |

You may subscribe to European Car magazine, but if you don't know what an Alpina B7 is, you don't read EC. I'm surprised he even noticed your old barge behind him.

-Thank you for the link. I looked it up, and that BMW was SUPERCHARGED. That thing has 500 hp and 515 ft/lb's of torque. That car walked away from my 928- it didn't run away, it walked away. Hmm. Did you know that there are two groups who sell superchargers for 928's? www.928motorsports.com has one, as does www.928gt.com. I showed up with a car that I paid $10,600 for, and though I got beat...my competition spent $115,000 for his car. Now, let me have Andrew Olsen's car against that Munich BARGE.... In any case, my "old barge" ran down a '98 Corvette and ran a dead heat in traffic against a C5 corvette one day. Listen- if "old barges" run like my car, then I want to buy a couple more for $10k- Have a nice day- N! |

Why do 928 owners always have to prove their pee-pee is bigger than yours?
![]() Alpina has been building giant-slaying BMWs for a LONG time. The B7 is the first to be legally imported to the states, then sold through BMW dealers. Might want to read that magazine a bit closer next time.

I enjoyed reading your post Normy, sorry the guys are beating up on you.
I really like the 928 cars especially from around '87/'88 when the styling really was much improved. I almost bought a 928 a year or two back but all I came come across were the auto cars with the 32V engines, and to me the performance was OK but not spectacular (maybe my expectation was too high, or the cars I drove were just overly tired?). Love the GT and GTS cars (of course) - who doesn't! Sounds like you have a quick 928, if you are pulling a 13.8 1/4 mile!! Anyhoo...you did not say what generation B7 Alpina spanked you. Alpina have been building B7 cars since the very early '80s, these cars are VERY serious, they are just not fancy badges, sexy wheels, spoilers and a lowered supsension, many have had extensive engine work including big turbos or Supercharged on the new V8 models. A timeline for you 1983ish... This is a B7 with an easy 350-380hp: ![]() This one 500+hp ![]() Regards - Yasin

The Alpinas are super nice, but I'd never buy one. WAY too much electronics crap in them. I imagine in a few years they'll be just like the 850s of years gone by (which I actually like) - way too expensive to maintain for that reason.
Nobody wants the 850s because the V12s are frightfully expensive to maintain and I'm sure the BMWs of today will be similarly insanely expensive to maintain in a few years when the wiring and circuitry and sensors start getting crudded up or failing. Unfortunate, because other than that they're really amazing automobiles.

Onewhippedpuppy,
Thanks for that. This is almost true, even. Mine can suck the headlights out of a Carrera or 944 turbo of the same vintage, so I guess I got a special one. Wait a minute, I'm not supposed to know that. Or admit it? Or tell other people about it? I'm confused. I do agree with you on the street racing. I drove the wife's Carrera yesterday and some $%^&$%^ in a BMW 330Ci tried to race me every time I got within 10 yards of his back bumper. Rush hour traffic, too. I managed to pull up nxt to him at a traffic light and it was convenient for me to express my opinion of his behavior. The idiot thought I was trying to strike up a friendly conversation with him... Nope. JR Last edited by Z-man; 09-19-2008 at 12:01 PM.. Reason: language |

Jeff, you just described EVERY new car on the market today.
JR, there you go again. You 928 owners are so SENSITIVE. What is it about the 928 that makes you all exert your e-toughness every time you don't get respect? Nobody respects the 944 either, but I don't see all their owners boasting about how their 951 can beat up your car. No need to be so pissy, learn to take a joke. ![]() I very nearly purchased two different 928s, and they're one of my favorite cars. So RELAX.

There's a black Alpina Z8 roadster around here that I see every now and again. Beautiful looking car. The gentleman driving it wears a leather flying helmet. There's is no way I'd try and race it (not that I do that sort of thing anyway).
