Whose Company Is Laying Off?

I'm curious, who here is seeing layoffs at their company? Big or little?

Wondering what impact the economy is having on PPOT employment.

To start off, the company I work for (strictly speaking, it is a JV arrangement) cut appx 10% in the spring and another 10% this week. Cutting all sorts of other expenses too, including comp cuts.

I work for the big phone company that starts with an A and ends with a T. In my group in July we laid off over 200 people just in Orange County. Now they were contractors and knew they had a limited time but it was about one year earlier than they thought. We are now trying to get as much done without them and of course it doesn't work. For example the engineering group went from about 130 down to 12. I was not affected nor were any union employees but it will be interesting to see what next year brings!

I left Ford in '07 due to VSSP (Voluntary Salaried Separation Program) and my current company has been affected and had to cut some employees. Every company in my area that I know of is either not hiring or actively cutting heads.

I work for a very large grocery chain that starts with a K and ends with an R and we haven't and have no plans to lay off anyone. The good thing about recessions is they tend to help sales at grocery stores since people don't go out as much.

My ex is at Intel and they just shut down the division that she did IP for. Now she has to scramble with another division and is worried that she'll be cut.

We're doing fine (knock on wood) but a number of my contracts end this calendar year. Have to scramble to get on other projects and bring some new stuff in the door. Such is life...

The company I worked for made cuts three times. I was in the third group.

I was just at the local home depot. The cash register guy was talking to a girlfriend that they just laid a ton of people off. She asked why. The store was empty.

Company I work for isn't laying off, but we aren't hiring, either. Of course, this *is* our slow season, so we wouldn't be hiring anyway. As far as cost savings, we're no longer getting the correct packaging for a certain line of products, and are instead using the generic ones. Costs are on the rise. Also, we're moving from the leased building back into the owners house at the end of the lease. They feel running the business out of the house allows them to be more productive with both work and family, and at the same time it will save a bunch of $$ per month.

Other than that, no real changes that I can see (where I work).

Yes, we just "reorganised" the management structure at my family owned company.

I will probably have to layoff at least a couple of people soon. I hope that we can hold out until after the holidays.

We are a vending company based out of Grand Rapids, 3rd generation now runs the show and times are tougher than even the most senior people have seen them. I have 18 years in, 10 in management. I plan to stay as long possible and hope to retire from the company.

EDIT: I am not related to the folks that own the company. I'm just an area supervisor.

Some of you might have seen my post on the situation in Consumer Electronics retail. Tweeter just canned their whole management, admin & whse staff. The retail staff will liquidate inventory starting tomorrow. Once it's gone, they're gone. Probably 1200 bodies all told.

And the retail bloodbath is just starting. Circuit City might move quickly now to close a swack of stores & layoff people. Then add in staff in the wholesale & distribution services that supply them.

Then there is the rest of the retail segment. Clothing, shoes & on & on & on. The writing is on the wall that retailers will be hurting this season.

It is not going to be a Merry Christmas for many.

Ian

or next Spring. Just got 1 of my 3 biggest orders in for Spring. It's less than 1/2 the volume our last order for a shirt they absolutely loved.

I see a lot of Small Business going out of business in 09.

We are in year 8 of the largest IT project in my company's history. We have an even larger project waiting to start when mine is done. In my department, we have about 6,000 employees and 8,000 externals. My company has never had a layoff in 80+ years of existence. Sure, we've closed offices and what not, but we always offer you a comparable position in a different office (which might be cross country). We usually lose people when they decide not to move. The down economy doesn't hurt our revenue much, but it does cause our expenses to go up. We usually end up raising prices when the economy is down because of this. My company also happened to be one that saw the subprime mess for what it was and avoided it altogether. We felt no pressure to follow the pack as we are not publicly traded.

My company, the big phone co. that has a V & Z in its name has been cutting our management staff every 3 months for the past year. They just let 20 people go yesterday, just in my area (NYC). They will pink slip another 20 in Jan.

My company had a sizable layoff two weeks ago. I had to layoff 4 of 6 on my team - not fun. The company next to us had a layoff yesterday - tough times all around

I used to work for what was the largest electrical construction company in the tri-county area. In the past year they made 4 cuts and have let go of 75% of the employees. I was in the 4th cut. The remaining salaried workers took a 25% pay cut and the hourlies were dropped from full time to working half days.
