Are you serious? It would cost a fortune - it is a sophisticated radar-linked anti-missile system.

You want guards with small arms and maybe a couple of crew-served 50's -- maybe.

Even that is going to drive up your price at the pump -- the oil transport biz works on a real penny-pinching margin.
It would cost a fortune and it is actually a stand alone system. You could have one in your front yard if you supply 440VAC 3phase and cooling water. The latest version is the 1bravo witch, it has a thermal "camera" that enables its use as an offensive weapon.

According to the Reference Book of Pirate Protocol, they bury it, and as long as someone has a map and doesn't lose it, it's fairly secure - probably a lot more secure than any US bank. Not sure about 100 million gallons of oil though.

OK, apparently if you are going to put security personell on the ships, better have more than a token.

Two British security guards jumped overboard from a ship that was being seized by pirates. They were rescued by friendlies.

Col. Cooper had much to say about hired private security in his book To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth. In summary, he pointed out that one simply cannot pay another man enough to die for him.

The whole idea behind this sort of private security is to present an intimidating enough deterrent that no one dare attack. If anyone has the nutsack to attack, the hired guns may actually provide some initial resistance, based on machismo alone. If they start to lose all bets are off. They are not giving up their lives for some one else's property, or even for some one else's life. They are not endowed with the sense of duty and patriotism that keeps soldiers in a fight.

Two guys on a big ship, armed with small arms, are laughable in the face of what these pirates bring to the table. These two Brits did exactly what can be expected of anyone in that situation. And they survived. To hell with the shipping company's financial loss.

You need a minimum of 6 professionals per ship to defend it. They need to be equipped with 3-4 Barrett .50 cal sniper rifles > semi automatic for distance stuff, then some 7.62 semi auto or maybe some full auto .. 3 shotguns > if the pirates get in close and lastly > pistols when all goes to hell.

The biggest thing the pirates have is the RPG > the RPG self destructs at 900 meters > the Barrett is good to 1500m..

I think just the fact that the pirates approach a ship and they receive small arms fire .. that would deter them from the outset and they would go find something more docile.

But >> engage with the barrett and pour it on....

the 6 man team would provied port starboard security 3 men per side..

ships crew would assist with basic lookout.
