Hit another deer

This one got me on an off ramp, dirty b#@$h. I guess that is why the speed limit is 25 not 60. I was in a sweeping right hand turn and had no where to go.

I guess if you drive that much at night eventually you hit a few deer. This was my second one in 4 years. I drive 40,000 miles a year and half of them are at night and early morning.

Got me right between the head lights.

No, I did not kill the deer. Well, she was still breathing when I left. I feel bad about that, but I did not have anything that would have put her out of her misery.

So, this may be an off color story, but it is relevant-

This happened to a mother of a friend of mine. She was driving alone at night and hit a large deer at a pretty high speed. Spun the car into a ditch. She was OK but a little beat up and pretty shaken. A passer by immediately called 911 when they saw the wreck, and a police officer showed up right away. After the officer got her out of the car and made sure she was OK, he went over to the deer which was alive but laying in the ditch. He put 2 rounds in the side of the animal's head to put it out of it's misery. Unfortunately the woman who had just had the worst auto accident of her life got to watch this happen right in front of her!

I laughed a lot the first time I heard the story, but then thought about what that must have been like for her..

Living around here, I have a lot of close calls with deer, probably have to evade one 2 or 3 times a season.

Shumi this happened inside the town limits of South Hill VA., I don,t think the police could shoot the deer.

I dodge 2 or 3 every night.

My aunt hit a deer with her bug one time in WV and the state police helped her load it on the roof so she could have it butchered. this was the 80s. My dad was PO'd because he had just painted that bug for her and done a complete color change.

There was a recent report on the local news, here in KS you're something like 7x more likely to get in an accident with a deer than a drunk driver. Driving in the country in the fall/early winter it's rare to NOT see a deer at dusk or dawn.

Many years ago, I hit a black bear on a mountain road. It was a dark, moonless, drizzly night; so visibility was really bad. The car was an old Celica. The bear bolted from the shoulder of the road. We were going about 40 or so and clipped the bear in its hind quarter. Almost stopped the car dead. Upon impact, the water off the bear's fur covered the windshield. The bear spun and it ran off into the woods. No idea if/how bad it was hurt. About 100 yards up the road, a guy was hitchhiking and saw what had happened. We got him into the car in case the bear came looking for vengeance. It was a very wierd experience....
