How did it end up the way it is now?

I think they made some huge, huge styling compromises for rear passenger headroom and possibly luggage space in the rear. Which was dumb. They are being ran by marketing people over there.

Its very reasonable to think that the PAG marketing office is carefully scouting the reactions on the picture they have released. Its also likely that many of those, like here on Pelican, are negative. How much does that concern Porsche? Or do they estimate that those on boards like this are not the people that will afford or be interested in a car like that anyway? That people buying that car are well off gentlemen, momentarily bored with the BMW, casually looking into the Porsche sales office going - hey why donīt I try that one for a while, charge it to my Master card!

They should have known this design looks uglier than a horse's ass. Why submit the photo for reactions? Is PAG really this stupid?

Why the hell are they building a 4-door if they dont want to accommodate rear headroom and luggage space? Agreed it is ugly, but it should be able to hold 4 people by design, else just buy a 911.

I think the Z4 is an ugly car yet BMW has sold lots. Beauty is in the eyes...

I can understand how some folks think the Z4 looks good; I actually like it.

But, the picture of the Panamera in the OP is just plain ugly - that thing is out of proportion, awkward and . . . silly. I keep thinking it's a joke and hoping PAG will surprise everyone with a car that looks more like the two concepts I posted previously.

Dantilla 11-22-2008 06:13 AM

The Z4 has very buzy styling elements, but it has proper proportions for a sports car. The basic shape is pleasing to the eye, but it has very polarizing details. People either love it, or hate it.

The photo above shows a car with miserable proportions. No amount of detail work can change that.

The sad thing for me is that introducing a car this unsightly makes me less interested in the Caymans I've been eyeballing lately.

Maybe not the best of economic times to release a new car unless it's one of those exclusive uber-expensive, Saudi-specific, luxo-vehicles. A load of these could join the thousands of imports sitting at the port of entry (here in the states).

Automotive butt plug?

cantdrv55 11-22-2008 07:16 AM

You don't think the Z4's nose is too long in comparison to its rear?

I predict the Panamera is going to be a big seller when the economy turns around.

Gogar 11-22-2008 07:19 AM

I'm not saying it's NOT ugly, but it does kind of have the same hunchback styling cues as previous Porsche "diversions":

Are you insulting the 944s and 928s!?!?!?!

Ok, I only hate the side profile.

RWebb 11-22-2008 02:39 PM

I only hate the side and rear views....

Now, why couldn't they just cut a deal with Maserati (or buy it from the F people) -- you stamp out beautiful Q-portte bodies; we fill them with German non-breakable sports coupe/sedan mechanicals. Then we split the profits.

TheMentat 11-22-2008 02:40 PM

the rear pic doesn't look THAT bad..

scottmandue 11-22-2008 02:47 PM

I hate the "shark gill" vent on the side of the front fender... it has been done by everyone from Range Rover and Jag to Hyundai and Saturn. Doesn't fit in with the rest of the car IMHO.

CurtEgerer 11-22-2008 03:16 PM

What is it, some sort of BizzaroWorld Corvette?
