yes AZGFD ALSO use triangulation method of poachers in areas with fire towers while utilizing fixed wing aircraft. my buddies who run a garage here and werk on state vehicles all have the az. state "BIG 10" in the record books. they are dyed in the wool hunting fishing freeks. since they werk on state vehicles and are members of rocky mtn elk society, az bighorn sheep society, az varmint callers etc. they are WIRED FOR SOUND for what goes on across the state as far as game and fish infractions. thereby i get the low down about whats going on and where poachers are active.

i would give my left nut to nail a poacher. aside from the big ass monetary reward........i would be saving an animal that is just shot for its rack or backstraps left to rot.

the azgfd is asking for help with the 2 bull elk poached here recently up in ashfork,az.

all ya need is a plate number and let yer fingers do the walking to big buck nirvana. 1-800-gamethief here in az.

have run across 2 cow elk poached in same unit years ago and let dave pender azgfd officer know about it when we crossed paths.

poachers suck big time around here.

Same here in Washington, and I would imagine most other states. As much as I loathe poachers, in particular the professional kind getting big racks to order or stocking resturaunts with game meat, I have to say the punishment has gone too far. It does not fit the crime, not even close. And they typically pile it on the wrong people.

We enjoy Constitutional protections against unreasonable search and siezure. Confiscating literally tens of thousands of dollars worth of property - pickup truck, trailer, or motorhome, quads, rifles, etc. definitely falls into the "unreasonable" category. One can commit a multitude of crimes that actually hurt other people, not wild animals, and get nowhere near this level of punishment.

I understand what they are trying to do insofar as targeting the "professionals". Problem is, the guys going into the woods with the sole intent of poaching do so with little gear, and cheap gear at that. A crapped out old truck and a rifle they likely wrap up and hide out in the woods anyway. A few hundred bucks, maybe, between the truck and the rifle. They can well afford such "operating losses". If they actually get caught...

The guys who really get stung by this (and there have been several here in Washington) are the guys who either make an honest mistake, or let a momentary lapse in judgement get the better of them. The former because our game laws have become so needlessly complicated (our hunting regs are now over 100 pages long) the latter because success rates here are so damn low (about the lowest in the country - 8% on elk, 20% on deer) that some folks lose all judgement when they see the bull or buck of a lifetime, and it's out of the unit, they shoot it from the road, or whatever. These folks do not deserve to lose everything they brought with them. They are not the ones the law was written for, yet they are the ones who really get nailed.

It's because they are a relatively "easy" target compared to the real pros. The real pros are almost impossible to catch - the wilderness is a big place. So the Game Department, in its zeal to appease concerned hunters and a concerned public, has to make it appear as if they are "doing something". Nothing says that like a big, well publicized siezure. Kind of like the DEA approach. It really has no affect whatsoever on poaching, but it sure looks impressive to the unwitting.

true our laws are about a gazzilion pages and you need to have damn good eyesight to read all the damn small print.

butt poaching is bad here in arizona. true story...........boss owns section of land up in lassen, calif. his ranch hand was out one day checking on tree cutters who were clearing fire breaks and thinning trees. comes around corner and sees (2) orientals with a toyota corolla in the middle of BFE and they is 40 miles from the nearest paved road. something in his brain said things aint right and he grabbed his .44 mag. next thing orientals are running for vehicle. they are on private posted land. he draws down on them and they stop. he walks up to corolla and inside are (2) ak-47 style weapons and a freeking dead BLACK BEAR in back of seat!!!

yep going for the gall bladder. needless to say he armed himself with THEIR AK's and had the sheriff/calif game and fish respond and CORRAL THE IGNORANT POACHING ORIENTALS!

could have been real ugly. headlines read " ranch hand found dead in middle of BFE" no witness' no evidence, no nothing!

Those are the guys we are after, Charles. Good job on the ranch hand's part. His alertness probably saved his life, and put a couple of crooks in jail (I hope).

So they lose a couple of cheap ass AK's and a Toyota pick up. I don't think that will slow them down much. They will be back at it when they get out. There is a lot of money in gall bladders. The truck and rifles are simply "business expenses".

What pains me is to see an otherwise honest guy lose stuff of some real value over some misinterpretation of the regs, or over a momentary lapse in judgment. Hell, we have had guys up here lose $100k+ boats over having too many salmon in the well. Or being caught with lines in the water on the wrong side of some buoy. It's just not right.

again part of the true story about the bear and the orientals. boss went out after this happened and bought a surplus british FERRET armored 6 wheel drive vehicle for ranch hand.

so if yer up in lassen county, calif and yer in the middle of nowhere BFE and this camoflaged FERRET armored vehicle pulls up...............you will KNOW they aint screwing around ! never heard what they armed it with. boss asked for suggestions and i gave him a shotgun news showing semi-auto .50 cal ads, browning semi-auto BAR ads and my buddies literature about semi-auto hk-21's in .308.

any of the above mentioned .................will fer sure preclude you from poaching bears in their neck of the woods!

but as with most laws...........they get pretty chicken-poo about some things. example: you must SIGN your big game permit before hunting. hell its got yer name address phone blood type, mothers maiden name and blood type............why do you have to sign it or risk a violation???? beats the hell outta us.

I was actually approached at work some years ago by an oriental co-worker who knew I hunted. He wanted gall bladders, and offered a grand apiece for them. I told him I wasn't interested. In retrospect, I should have gone to the WDFW and set him up. He obviously thought he could move them, so he obviously had connections. Would have been interesting to have the fish cops follow that trail.

$30-$40k? That cheap bastard. Now I really wish I would have turned him in.

One of the reasons I quit hunting in Oregon...these days, one needs to consult a Portland law firm before picking up a rod, rifle, or shotgun. The Oregon game regs booklet is many pages long now, and gets thicker every year.
