So I go to shave this morning. I use blades as opposed to electric. Running a little late as it is....

I find I'm out of shaving cream/gel. None in any bathroom. Scramble to find something to avoid "dry shaving". End up using my daughter's hair conditioner. Figured it's better than soap. I was surprised. It worked pretty well.

Got me thinking though. What are some of the alternatives you've come up with?

Neutrogena soap...that clear amber stuff. It's not Gillette foamy, but it works.

Personal lubricant.. there I said it. +1 on Neutrogena.I usually use regular old bar soap and shave in the shower.

I haven't used shaving creme/gel/foam in years.

I used to use regular soap. I have used hair conditioner.

Currently I use Dr Bonner's liquid soap.

I also use Quattro razors. I shave my head. I've found that it's almost impossible to cut yourself with a Quattro which is nice when you have a lot of visible surface area to shave.

Rubbing alcohol.

I get ingrown hairs terribly if let my whiskers go more than a day or 2.

I keep a separate blade on the bathroom counter to finish off the stragglers.

I've been doing this for 30 years without a nick.

My dad used the old mug, soap & brush. I tried it, and it works well. Still, that can of foam is cheap, handy, and fast...

using those brushes after you've been in the shower for a while is the best way

the shower soften everything up and brush gets down there and agitates the hairs at the base

'course, I never do that - I'm too lazy

I just use shampoo or soap - whatever is laying around - the Mach III with the sonic vibrator works great, no matter what. Huge improvments over the old "safety razors" -- makes sense as Schick/Gillette/et al. spent huge engineering bucks...

Shower, pre-wash with shampoo, use shaving cream or hand soap.

The biggest difference is the new electric-manual I got (the vibrating Fusion thing).

This vibrating razor shaves twice as close as any other I've used, the blades last longer, and no more nicks or ingrown hairs. It'll shave as close as I want, and requires less pressure, so no scratching. It's da bomb.

Shave in the shower too.

When it was available, the best stuff was Body Shop shaving oil. Just 2 drops and a VERY smooth shave.

Gel in the sink before the shower, and King of Shaves Gel in the shower on my head.

I don't actually grow facial hair, instead tiny titanium wires slowly work out of my chin, at least that's how it seems when I shave. So.. I shave in the shower and let a good shave cream soak in. Helps soften up the whiskers and makes the shave go much cleaner.

I've tried soap, might as well pluck them out.
I've tried shampoo, same thing, and it burned.
Conditioner? Burned and didn't shave close
Dry? NEVER in a million years.

I'm thinking a light brush with a wide-flamed propane torch in a bind...
