Vehicle lease turn in takes an interesting....turn

My '06 Tundra is ready to go back in two weeks and we are shopping all over for options. i like the truck but not the mileage it gets. i DO use the pickup bed and i DO tow but still 16mpg is kinda ****ty.

So, i call the dealer looking to break bad and negotiate a buyout lower than what i signed up for. No dice.

BUT....the dealer says 'no way you should buy that truck. you should turn it in and IF you want it back we'll resell it to you. or just buy another elsewhere for less.'

Best deal i see on an '06 Tundra d-cab 4x4 with 36k or less is $19.5k and it has 22k miles. So i figure auction on these things is around 16.8k. I say this to dealer and he hints that i'm not far off. So...turn the truck in and Toyota offers it to dealer for something near auction value and dealer sells to me for a small profit (say $1000) and i get my truck back for $2k less than the buyout was (even with sales tax). Dealer can't give figures yet but this seems reasonable. OR i could probably get the truck listed for $19.5k at $18k and be $2k under my buyout + have a lower mileage vehicle.

Issues at turn in are i'm slightly over on mileage (1,300) and a few dings that might get noticed.

Has anyone been through this and if so what do you think of my plan here?

Also we are looking at $25k subies and volvos as a possible replacement. So minimum $7k more to get a replacement vehicle and enjoy 15mpg better economy. not terribly exciting to me.

I would have to go without my vehicle for a week to get the re-buy done and i'd have to hope for nice weather as i'd be driving the 911 that week (taking little guy to daycare as well).

So the downside is they end up switching things up on you and jack the price. You can walk at that point, just don't sign anything saying you'll buy the truck unless it has a fixed price on it. I say trade it in and if they try to get shady you have no commitment.

I can't imagine you have a big attachment to that particular Tundra.

The plus side is you get your truck at a great price and they'll probably detail it for you.

Turn it in, walk away and go buy a Chevy for pennies on the dollar. Those guys are so desperate it's ridiculous. The dealerships are ghost towns right now.

LOL!

I suppose at today's prices you could buy one to drive and one for parts. Or for burning. Whatever's your fancy.

I'm in the exact same situation. Have an 06 4runner (V8 limited) with 30k miles and lease is up in Jan. Toyota will not negotiate on buy out price. My gut reaction is to say screw you, take it back then - BUT, I love the truck, and I need an SUV or something w/ reasonable cargo capacity. It's my dd most of the time and I can't find any similar trucks for sale that are less or even with my buyout price, but it nags me that I can't get a better deal...

Still haven't decided what to do. I have a st bernard so I need something reasonably big!

I've driven a chevy p/u and that's just not an option no matter how good the price.

2 for 1 eh?

Wow really? I have driven a Tundra, and no way I'd ever own one of those.

The Duramax + Allison is where its at....

big difference between the std. chevy p/u and a duramax/allison combo!

that is a work tool not just a useful vehicle.

my double cab v8 4x4 tundra is actually a sporty ride and handles quite well. you really know what's going on with the truck. not so with the GM.

Slight hijack but maybe not - what does anyone think about the Honda Ridgeline?

You really have no reasonable choice but to turn it in. You'll get hit for the excess miles and maybe for the dings and a termination fee. Hopefully the price offered to the dealer will reflect the miles and dings you get hit for and it'll be a wash if you buy it back. They probably can't quote you a price on it until they get their cost from TMCC. You'd have to pay the tax on any price you would have renegotiated with them anyway, but I think you know that. The good thing about buying that truck is you know its history.
