How much work do you actually do in a day?
If you had a timer and hit "start" while you were doing actual work, and "stop" when you were interupted, took a break, surfed PPOT

Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can't see me, heh heh - and, uh, after that I just sorta space out for about an hour.
Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

It varies for me. I have fits of massive productivity followed by (and preceded by) large periods where I am waiting on someone else to do something so I can get back to doing my work. I'm about a year ahead of schedule on my project too, so that leads to long periods while I wait for others to catch up. Because I have an excellent grasp on the business needs my programs are supposed to meet, I can usually get them done very quickly.
After this project is over (I've been on it for six years and it will last at least another three or four years), I'll move on to something else. There will be a steep learning curve and I won't be able to get work done as quickly as I can now.

My work day when in the field has pretty much been start at 9 and pick up at 3. No breaks, no lunch (I eat snacks on the fly). I figure that's anyone's 8 hour day when you include breaks and non-productive time and most likely better than that in a lot of circumstances. In general, that makes about an 8 hour day with driving included.
If I worked for a another contractor out of his shop in his truck, it would be about the same. Yet, I see a lot of those guys goofing off, so I don't know how some contractors that supply the truck make any money. And I work faster than most, or so I'm told. I'm only charging for the 6 hours, so I'm screwing myself. Many of my customers don't even pick up on the deal they're getting if I'm hourly. But, it's all over now because of the lack of work. So, I sit here and play when I should be making some molds for parts. At home I have so little time management skills it would pay for me to take any work with me and go to someone's else house. ![]() |

My productivity lately ranges between 25 and 80%. I'm burned out. I'm going to be working normal hours and turn that around after the holidays.

I work in an office full of chicks that like to please me. So, to answer your question....I get lots of work done. That's work isn't it?

I seriously try to put in an honest eight hours, but it's probably more like six or so if I'm physically in the office eight hours. On a typical day when I'm physically here 10-11 hours, I think I put in an honest eight. My occasional 2-3 minute "Pelican breaks" are for sanity and usually when I'm done reading or posting, I minimize and go right back to what I was doing. Maybe some days a little more and some days a little less, but I think it does honestly average out to eight hours of actual work stuff.

Actually a lot - I multi-task to the Nth degree (when I'm not watching maint. milk projects!). I wake at 5AM and don't shut down till midnight if not 1AM. I eat at my desk, when home I only watch TV (Discovery) with the Kids before bed. Once they are down I spend time doing crap for wifey then after she goes to bed I write.
Fortunitly The stuff I do at work I can do while doing other things (talk on the phone, surf web, go on this bored, shop, scan for porn...)

I spent all day trying to get an IBM FE to do a memory upgrade this weekend.
District managers, phone calls, pages, conference calls.... so....1 day out of 5?

When I first started with no real experience or marketable skills... 60+ hours on 40 hr week salary.
fast forward 17 years.... 1hr week. and paid 40 hr week salary. Those seemingly bad time really paid off and are still paying. |

When I'm back home? 12 solid hours. Once or twice a week the boss will feel generous and give me a lunch break, and it drops to 11 hours.
At school? I don't do nearly so much work for wages, but I'm constantly either doing homework, studying, or staring at the wall while trying to come up with elegant solutions to problems.

if im at our training center teaching, i'll get a solid 8 hours in. if i'm helping with courseware development or admin stuff, i'll probably get about 2 hours of work done in an 8 hour day. too much chatting, playing tricks, and telling jokes to the flight attendant instructors.

I'd be awfully damn productive if it weren't for the PITA customers or annoying employees.
