Ruger Mark III questions

Im curious about how people feel about this gun. I do not yet have my pistol permit but am in the process of doing the paperwork.

I have never used a hand gun, only 22 caliber rifles and shotguns.

I LOVE this Ruger on a purely aesthetic basis. I just think it looks beautiful and functional and the price is right.

My primary purpose of getting the hand gun is for target shooting at the range.

In the off chance that my home is invaded, ill certainly use it for protection. Im not a hunter and dont care about how it functions in that scenario and ill never walk around with it unless im camping or perhaps a long motorcycle trip

Im attracted to the 4 3/4" barrell. The Mark6 appears to be the same gun but with a 6 inch barrell

Am I being foolish in not considering the longer barrell?

And overall, what are your thougths on this gun? reliable, cleaning, performance, feel, quality of construction, accuracy etc...

Reliable as hell, obviously the longer barrel will be more accurate. The S&W A22 is also in the same class as this pistol and possibly is a little cheaper. Both of them are well built and economical to use at the range.

I have the 22/45. It is a beautiful pistol, however it has had a couple of problems with clip locating the round correctly....not a big deal but it is a little annoying. I have recently spent some time cleaning it, eventhough it is a new gun with only about 100 rds through it, so hopefully this will take care of the problem. Paid $479....I think

If you are not going to carry it, consider the 6" Much improved accuracy due to the longer sight radius (very little to do with ballistics of the actual round)

I have the Competition version. It's very sweet ! Used it for indoor pistol league. It's the only way to go. I like the balance with the heavy bull barrel. it's very popular with the league shooters. Get the longer bull barrel. You will be very happy with it.


22 rim fire is a very poor choice for home defense.

Unless squirrels are breaking in.

I used to have the bull barrel version of that pistol.. the P512. We used to buy a brick of ammo and run through the whole thing in one day.

+1...It's fine for economical target practice.
Protection is different matter altogether.

It's a nice little piece. However, I prefer a Mark II zooted out with parts from Clarks custom Guns. Check 'em out...

Target shooting, perhaps a league eventually, is my priority with this gun. Learning how to operate and clean, dissasemble etc.....

Im positive it will not be my one and only handgun and my next will be chosen based on personal protection needs perhaps. Although, there are no grizzly bears where i live and a .22 to the human head is sure to kill an intruder. i suppose for home protection my default choice would be a shotgun

I am not sure about the range you plan on going to but all the ones I have ever shot at have loaner handguns. You can try out different ones before choosing one. Maybe worth a try if you have never shot before.

I think the plastic loaded chamber indicator on the III's is a little cheesy, a few other minor changes from the II. I can think of better home defense guns but you have to start somewhere.

I've got a MK II with the target barrel. I love the gun and shoot it all day for about $10. Very accurate even out to the 50yd range. Tearing the gun down is easy, getting it back with the locking mechanism in the handle is a different story.

bought the 22/45 stainless fluted barrel. slapped 200 rds thru it. took to nelson ford "the gunsmith" he took it apart. he found nothing wrong and nothing he could improve. said "go shot the poo outta it and bring it back in if anything goes wrong."

slapped bushnell red dot scope on it. dialed it in with another 200 rds of crap ammo.

hits everything i aim at every single time.

everybody that shoots needs juan of these. great incredible practice and bottomline...................

I would NEVER recommend a rim-fire for self defense or carry. Rim-fire misfires are quite common. That reason alone TOTALLY eliminates them from consideration in any kind of defense role.

I have the exact same model and I have to consult the manual for reassembly every time.

I prefer the Mark II over the Mark III. Yes, the magazine release is weird.

i didnt say i carry one CCW.

i stated how well they work. considering i have had a 10/22 since i had to shave and im freeking 51 now, i kind of know how to make them werk all the time. i now own 2 10/22's with .920 taget barrels, 1 from ruger stainless and the other i built.

so with the 22/45 thats 3 of them.

and should zombees invade my camp or home..................well we'll see if thats all i have the moment they strike...............WHO WALKS AWAY!
