California is just whacked

The news recently reported the California court system has the major reputation of awarding millions in frivilous lawsuits to anyone willing to sue. Our courts are backlogged with lawsuits of every nature and from everywhere.

If that isn't enough, our state is $50 billion in debt with a huge and ever-growing unemployment rate. State legislature is trying to pass bills raising our gas tax another .20-.30 cents a gallon and we already have the highest priced gasoline in the country. State sales tax, and host of other tax increases are also in this package. This is not the time to gouge folks just because the state can't run it's own finances. They are trying to pass these tax laws with only 50% vote instead of the two thirds stated by our state constitution. They are breaking the law while trying to pass law. Ironic? Stupid? Yes, and yes.

Yesterday our state supreme court ruled that good samaritans can be personally sued if they use poor judgement while rendering aid. All we need is another good reason to ignore our fellow man while he and family burn to death.

If both our families weren't so damn embedded here, I would vacate this hell hole in a heartbeat.

edit: url about samaritan getting sued... http://www.latimes.com/news/la-me-good-samaritan19-2008dec19,0,2109787.story?track=rss

Lets see... you can get sued if you dont render aid, and you can get sued if you do render aid... yep looks like that have all the angles covered....

What I like is the proposed 2.5% surcharge on your income taxes. A surcharge on taxes, by calling it a fee! If Arnold signs this, we're screwed forever. They'll pull this tactic every year and keep raising taxes.

For those not in Californication, the legislature needs 2/3 vote to raise "Taxes", they can't get it with the slim Republican minority, so they decided to call these proposed increases "Fees" instead of "Taxes". A "Fee is like when you pay $10 to park at the state beach, it's a payment you pay directly for a service you are receiving right at that moment (i.e., parking).

I'm thinking about leaving myself... I've got a good opportunity in New England right now, but I used to hate living there almost as much as here - and at least CA has good weather!

I suppose this should have been placed in the political forum.

I am not saying Arnie does not have an agenda but he did not like the fact that this did nothing to dig us out of the hole we are in. Whether it is ethical or not has never seemed to bother any politician ( Arnie included ) that I have seen, at any level of government since my ability to vote. As long as it serves "their" ideals then it is ok with "them".

We are in for some much needed hard times, tough love as it were, on both a state and federal level.

San Jose from 1985 to 1995. Sure glad we cashed out & moved back to Texas. I miss being close to Monterey, PCH, the Wine Country, Los Gatos, Etc. But I sure don't miss getting it in the "ear" every day just to be there.

BTW, the Good Samaritan thing never applied to doctors and nurses, have not stopped at an accicdent since finding this out in a CPR class. Your malpractice insurance probably would not cover you either, unless you happened to be an ER doc

I'll mention this to my son, since he's now practicing in CA.

California has some serious troubles. Just sad and disappointing. I could go on for days on what has happened but if you look at legislation passed in the mid 70's it is a history lesson in what not to do.

I have thought about leaving but it is my home. Problem in fighting those with the big money on both sides of the aisle.

Hee, Hee.......like that's going to happen.

I remember an old Reagan campaign quote "Don't vote for me because you believe in me, vote for me because you believe in yourselves."
What a quaint, antiquated concept.

California is, and has been, run by solid Democrat majorities for a long time. It is a huge state, and a huge economy. It is a huge experiment of Democrat rule and principles in action.

High taxes on individuals, esp. the top tax payers (the top 1% of tax payers pay FIFTY PERCENT of the state income tax), high taxes and regulations on businesses (there is a state agency to regulate every minutia of business life), basically an open border policy, no real enforcement of immigration law, high spending on social programs, budget deficit spending, and all the other progressive principles are in full effect in California.

How's that working out again?

It's cold and there's snow on the ground in KS, I couldn't be happier.
