WSJ lists the companies that will not see New Years Day 2010

1. Chrysler
2. Sirius XM
3. AIG
4. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
5. Rite Aid
6. The New York Times (This could be proof positive that there is a God)
7. Nortel
8. Pier 1
9. Charter Communications
10. Hovnanian

Appendix: Based on the most recent news GM may get added soon.

I'll miss the NYT Sunday Book Review. But then again, book publishing as an industry may cease to exist.

Books will always be printed...or at least downloadable...

Chrysler will be merged into GM most likily or bought up....

AIG is so huge, that its parts are worth more than the whole and is still a profitable business.. so the pieces will be broken up and scattered to the winds...

An ERA has now come to an end. The American Post War WW2 Prosperity Bubble has now gone flat...now it is back to reality and hard time to follow...the real crash and burn is going to be on those who have bin livin large...cause they is the ones who have the farthers to fall back to earth...

Downloadable hasn't yet taken off, though. I wonder why?

I don't want to delve into the copyright issue for intellectual property. However my point is that people need to see it in paper and in their hands. Especially with reference books on guns and art. You can alwys flip to the pages needed.

I'll always need a book or magazine IN MY HANDS, never on the net etc. A town without a bookstore is lost.

Interesting list. I've been wondering about Sirius, they are in trouble. It's a shame, they have a great service but are too tied to new car sales apparently. I think Nortel has been on a similar list for 6-8 yrs now, they keep hanging on.

Bill Gates has said that if computers came first - that printing would be hailed as a great invention. He is right about that..

Anyway - companies that might not be around in 2010 include mine. We are not that big, we are doing well and have a wealthy parent company that steered clear of this financial mess.

The parent may buy up one of these faltering companies that are a great deal right now - and merge us into it. That would be bad.

+1

I was just laughing at myself today because I am addicted to my Stiletto. I take the dog on a walk/jog every morning and listen to it. Then jump in the truck with it docked and listen on my way to the gym. Once at the gym I link up with the internet and listen to it while working out.

I also dock it in the garage and listen when working on the cars as well as dock it in the back porch when we are grilling going in the pool etc...

Sucks indeed.

I hope my company makes it through 2010, when talking to some of my competitors we all agree whoever gets through this to the other side will be golden.

+1 also...I never listen to my pod or fm anymore. I've noticed after the merge they've been pimping the lifetime memberships pretty hard. You can hear it in the dj's voices that they don't feel it. Sucks, what is their biggest expense? Advertising? Satellites?

Interesting Gates should say something as ridiculous as this, as I've read many times how the Gutenberg Printing Press is regarded as one of the worlds, if not, the greatest invention of mankind.

It rightly is. The printing press. And beer.

The point I think Bill Gates was making (I don't have the exact quote), is that even if computers came first and caused the same kind of revolutions as the printed word - that the printed word would still be considered a great invention because of it ease of use and portability...

Another Bill Gates quote I don't remember exactly - something about how kids should not be on the computer more than one hour a day and should spend their time playing and doing more productive things..

Are they saying that the merged Sirius/XM will be gone, or just Sirius?

Books will not go away because it's a simple, easy, time-tested technology that doesn't require some silly, battery-powered thingamabob that costs $1,000 in order to use.

Yes, I do often like the ability to reference certain things (like building codes and other voluminous tomes) on my laptop, but sometimes there's just nothing better than sitting down with something in print. They do have their drawbacks though - books are heavy (very heavy), flammable and don't hold up very well to water (then again, neither do laptops).

Books on CD are pretty cool when driving too. It makes it not such a waste of time. I'm currently trying to learn French.

Print books, online books, audio books, etc. all have their place and setting in which they're the superior medium.

I wonder what will replace Fannie and Freddie?

I don't agree with the list. The link would not take me directly to the article and I couldn't find it otherwise. I'll reserve further comment until I can see the reasoning.

My daughter has her science textbook on a CD. What a pain. Needing multiple pages open, scrolling back and forth looking for references, going back to re-read a question, yada yada...

I'd rather have a few sticky-notes holding pages in a real book.

If I'm going to read a book, I'd rather sit in my comfy chair than stare at the computer screen.
