laptop to plasma via HDMI

Why when I hook up my laptop to my AV system via HDMI does the sound not work? I thought HDMI carried all signals. What am I missing here?

Dell XPS1530

The Receiver is a Sony and the Plasma is a Samsung.

so the HDMI from laptop goes to the Sony AV system then to the TV

how about connecting laptop to TV directly via HDMI and see if it is the Sony at fault.

Is it possible there's a preference setting in the computer that controls what's coming out of that HDMI output?

Is it really HDMI, or a mini-DVI-HDMI adapter? DVI won't carry sound.

Correct

If it is an HDMI out, (and they do exist, have one in my conference room,) then you do need to set sound out to HDMI in Control Panel.

If it's DVI then you need to run separate 1/8 audio out (headphone) to receiver input

Maybe, I'll check into that.

It really is HDMI though, it's labeled as such above the connection.

Also check the type of HDMI cable you have. Earlier cables had problems carrying bot the vidro and audio data. I think the latest rev. of HDMI cables is 1.3a but do a check with a site like monoprice.com to be sure.

good luck,
Michael

I just thought of another potential snag for you. Your receiver might ONLY pass video via HDMI and not audio. The Onkyo home theater receiver I got for the bedroom had that problem.

HEEEY that sounds familiar to me as well. Try straight from the laptop to the plasma and see what happens.

OK, still no dice. I switched the audio output to HDMI being the default and all looked good but even direct to the TV I got nothing.

I'll call Dell tomorrow.

Do you have another setup where you can verify the HDMI cable is OK?
