I got that funny feeling--resume tips please
Yes I'm lucky to have a job, I know. Sorry to everyone on here that has lost theirs recently. I may be joining you soon. I just took a major pay cut and let's just say I'm getting my ducks in a row. I haven't written my resume in 16 years. Shame on me. In those 16 years I've read a lot of resumes. It's quite different when you have to write your own after so long. I digress. As much as I hate to admit it, you guys rock. Have any good tips? Lots of sites for this out there but I thought I'd start with you guys to avoid having to actually start this arduous process. So far the only thing I have is under Job Objective I have "Hookers and Blow". Good start, no? Help.

Take the ones that impressed you the most and adapt it to your use. Hopefully you won't need it though. Good luck.

To me, a resume is not an expose'. It is (or should be) a tantalizing summary. Screeners read hundreds or thousands, so make it easier for them. Screeners are looking for a reason to place your resume in the "no" pile. Don't give them that reason.

I am a VP of sales and have read a lot of resumes in my time. My advise, bullet points of major skills and a section with short highlights of major accomplishments.
That is what I take a glance at to see if I will read any more.

I'm sure you've heard this 100 times but your best bet is a personal network. Your second best bet is to strike up a very strong relationship with a very good recruiter. Your third best bet is to overnight a very brief, very professional summary to the CEO or EVP Sales of some target companies. Use your sales skills to follow up the receipt and get an appointment with that person. Ask more questions about the company than they ask of you to show that you're picky about who you choose to work for.

Focus on accomplishments and milestones, not a list of tasks. Lead with action words to grab the reader's attention. Make yourself impressive without resorting to BS (i.e. don't be humble). Create a graphically attractive resume (nice header, font, quality paper if hard copy required). Proofread the hell out of it, then get someone else to do the same. Typos and poor grammar = trash can. Focus on what you can do for the company in question, sometimes this requires changing your accomplishments to better suit the job you are seeking.
Sorry about your bad luck, hopefully you don't need it. The above tips were some of the best pointers an engineering manager gave me on my own resume. She's a pretty sharp lady, currently an assistant dean at a college and former NASA employee. It's worked well for me.

when i was looking, my sister was in the position to hire people. she was good enough to save every good resume (and more importantly, cover letters) that came across her desk. it was super helpful. plus i had all my friends proof-read for me. you have seen my typing...hideous.

One major resume negative for me is seeing long lists of "responsibilities" without any mention of "accomplishments". I don't give a crap what your last job required -- I want to know what you DID there and whether you made it over the bar, or crashed and burned.
A site and podcast I follow is Manager Tools (http://www.manager-tools.com). Obviously it is mainly focused on management tips and techniques but there has been significant coverage of the other side (resumes, networking, headhunters, and interviewing skills) as well. Good luck. Hate to ask but have all the online stock image firms such as iStockPhoto cut into your line of business dramatically? Or is there still a strong market for commissioned commercial photography outside of the stock photo world?

Shorter is better. The advice of bullets and short summaries is very good. Taylor your resume to each specific job you apply for. That's a lot of work, but it is more likely that you land an interview.

I would seriously consider having a website link on your resume to a personal website resume?
Dott, Thanks, I do.  btw, RE sales is about 10% of what I do, fyi. I mostly read, relax, drive, ski, sled, swim and drink beer
