In terms of early reports, my technical guys say they took some of Server 2008 and incorporate it into Vista, but the same general system. Speed is so subjective as there is a dependency on hardware and also on path through the OS code, if the routine being tested has limited use of OS routines, it will get down to raw hardware speed. If it uses Microsoft code and they have done the trivial thing of optimizing the code path then you will see a relative improvement. I am more concerned with changes to the user interface, taking Office 2007 vs Office 2003 as a comparator, Microsoft made a number of changes to the UI that are not materially better....just different. This makes implementation much more difficult for no apparent reason and Vista certainly has a big dose of unnecessary change. Can anyone comment further on the UI of 7? Dennis

Friends don't let friends do Windows
![]() Yes you haters I'm a Mac guy and other than the server, the platform is awesome, if you want to run Windows on it go ahead, if you need command line Linux/Unix go ahead, it has everything you could want. The costs over the longer term are way less as my Macs typically last 5 years. Microsoft has a stranglehold on the manufacturers so you MUST upgrade when getting a new system. For the Corporate world I never understand why Linux is not making huge end roads, free OS, free office suite (with PDF capabilities) and now with KDE or Gnome the GUI is so easy to use. Open Suse Rules, or Ubuntu..... Yes let's all hope Microsft gets it right so all the users can be forced to the new OS and pay millions in licensing fees, and spend millions more combating the inherent flaws in the OS....

I like it so far, but java apps seem to have taken a bit of a dump. MegaLogViewer for MegaSquirt doesnt work right so far.

My issue is the support issues. I've been absolutely fine with the previous versions of Office for Mac and PC, but Microsoft chose to change the UI on both, and will eventually stop supporting older versions. So, as a consequence, I tell users if they can't deal with Word 2007 (PC) or 2008 (Mac), to use one of the Open Office suites (free for PC and Mac users). As to the UI for 7, the only reason I can see for Microsoft to change is 1) Faster; 2) to look like Mac's OSX. These aren't necessarily bad reasons, IMO.

When they released Vista people spent a great deal of time trying to patch a product that should not have been released. Don't know about you but I'd rather spend the money on a better product and and not have to deal with issues like software patches, or even worse, viruses. Just ask Steve.

If I remember correctly, wasn't XP full of issues when it was first released. I remember a lot of people swearing they would never give up 98.

Nonetheless, if I could get both a Mac and Windows machine on Linux, I'd buy nothing but year or two-old machines, and have myself a wild time screaming through applications. ![]()

XP Professional was pretty solid. I won't upgrade beyond this for our home network, unless it's to Unix or we'll crush the PCs and get iMacs.

Never say never. 7 is pretty good so far. I could eat those words, but again 7 is faster than Vista (and probably XP) and hasn't shown any problems. In other words, better than you could hope for from the first public beta.
