Plus, if those oldies are actually as good as they look in the pics? $40K might not be enough. But yeah, these days, chasing NLA parts isn't the fun it used to be.

The challenger is HUGE - I agree. It's a good looking car though.

I'd wait for the Camaro or try and find 2006 GTO with little miles (the one based on the Holden)

They are fun cars - big enough for you - and make a nice sound when you stick your foot in it.

What about a Pontiac Solstice Turbo or Saturn Sky Redline?

They are pretty fast and inexpensive track beasts and are generally underrated. RWD, independent rear suspension, LSD, twin-scroll turbo. Go take one for a test drive. You will either love it or hate it. It only has 4 cu. ft. of trunk space, that shrinks to 1 cu. ft. with the top down, so it is a dedicated "toy".

Yeah...I've got a beautiful supercharged G35 that I know he & his wife would love for under 1/2 his looking price, but alas, he still wants "new". Quick, comfy, back seat, a real trunk and the wife picked it out.

Best of luck in your search Paul!

(Anyone else want a great G35? It's taking up garage space).

Not only are they huge, but just knowing how beautiful the lines and proportions are on the original...

...makes 'em even less attractive, IMO.

Agreed. The new Camaro executes the retro look far more successfully IMO.

you know - you don't have to keep this car for decades....

get a Mustang now and think about a swap to the Camaro when it comes out + 1 year (for debugging of the initial model)....

Ewwww! To both of those! (edit) Besides, cars depreciate like crazy...I wouldn't want to be trading every year or so...want something I could hopefully enjoy for a longer period.

I looove mine!

The old Z cars are fun - had a first year 240 w/280Z motor (single carb w/turbo) and two 280s.

Hard to find one w/o integrity threatening rust around the front suspension, though.

The nearest G-37 dealer to me is in portland-portland-portland! A place I prefer to avoid as much as possible.

Portland, Oregon a city where an 18 year old can enjoy a Sam Adams. (local joke)

I've put 7k miles on an '08 C30 that's shared the garage with my SC since last Feb.
Turbo 5 cyl, 6 spd, 227 hp, wrong wheel drive (oh, well), 0 to 60 in 6.2 sec.
Smooth, quiet and lottsa low end torque. Didn't think I'd like it as much as I do.
And to my eye, it's really good looking. Some exclusivity too - around where I live in SoCal, anyway.

I gotta admit though, this last post has me scratching my head and shrugging my shoulders in confusion.

I’d hate to break it to you, but realistically, it’s going to be tough to find anything as ‘nice as what the two of you had’. But who says you need something as nice as that? Then you go on to say ‘I have to get it in my head that I’m done being a car guy’. Boo Hoo. I call BS. You wouldn’t have checked out the Z, you wouldn’t be on this board still frequently engaging in car discussions, and you wouldn’t bring up the Green Elephant as much as you do in your posts if you weren’t a car guy.

Since you live pretty remotely; why not get something relatively common, somewhat inexpensive and relatively fun to drive. In listening to you, it sounds like to me all you need is something civilized with plenty of power that when you feel like it, you can stomp on the gas, generate some thrust and exhaust rumble and be on your way. More importantly, I think you’ve reached the age where you shouldn’t give a flying feck what people think about your car; you should care what it does for you and you alone. You should know what that means by now. Go drive at a Challenger. Go drive a Mustang. Go drive a Caddy V-Spec. Hell, go look at a used Mercury Marauder, or buy some old American Iron. And if it doesn't do anything for you in a year or so, big deal. Move on to somehting else. It's just a car.

Just do something, man and enjoy life will ya?!
Great post, I think you nailed it. Every car you remotely like, you find a way to talk yourself out of. Quit trying to find a perfect car. Quit trying to find a car that equals your '72 S. Aint gonna happen. Just find something that puts a smile on YOUR face. To hell with everyone else. You know I'm right, even your wife agrees with me.

Another excuse. And if you buy anything remotely common, you're totally wrong. You can build an entire classic Mustang from an NPD catalog. That goes for EVERY semi-popular classic.

Since the new stuff doesn't do it for you, why not something old? Unlike a modern car with computer diagnostics, any local garage can work on an old Mustang or 240Z, and the parts are easy to find. You can find a mint driver Mustang, 240Z, and a host of other cars for under $20k.

So you want to eat you cake and have it too huh? You won't share with us any criteria, so we throw stuff out only to be shot down.

Are you having fun?

Ahhh, but this morn, I read what Cindy had emailed a friend...she's right:

"He felt good enough yesterday to drive to Albany and check out a new Nissan 370Z. All I could think of was it wasn't nearly as nice as what we had. Oh well, if he wants it and it makes him happy I'm all for it."

Gotta get it in my head that I'm done being a car guy. If I'm to drive something ugly, it might as well be cheap ugly, right?

(edit) I mean, nobody cares what you drive to the pool hall.

Before you write it off go and find a 08 350Z with the VQ35HR motor (dual throttle body) get a base model. opt for an aftermarket 1.5way LSD + 2 piece hat and rotors. opt for some Bilstien yellow shocks. Leave the rest of the car alone. You can get a really sweet deal on a 08 now, probably like $5k+ off sticker.

If you want just a car for your self its an awesome driver for the money but if you need room and all of the extra drama needed for your needs buy what ever else. !.
